A Minecraft Stonecutter is an advanced tool that can be used as an alternative method of crafting various Stone-related blocks.

Here’s how to craft and use a Stonecutter in Minecraft.

How to Craft a Stonecutter

To craft the Stonecutter, place 3 Stone blocks along the bottom of the Crafting Table, with an Iron Ingot in the center. Place it down and you can access it the same way that you would a Crafting Table, but you’ll be presented with a unique menu.

In the menu, insert any Stone-related blocks you have in the slot on the left, and options will appear in the central window. Click one of these options, and the result will appear in the slot on the right.

Why Use a Stonecutter?

You may be wondering why go to the effort of crafting and using a Stonecutter if there aren’t any unique blocks you can create with it. The answer is efficiency in terms of materials. For example, using a regular crafting table, it would require 6 Cobblestone to craft 4 Cobblestone Stairs. However, if you use a Stonecutter, the exchange is 1-1, meaning you could craft 64 Cobblestone Stairs from a full stack of Cobblestone, as opposed to the 40 you would get from a Crafting Table.

As such, if you have a Stonecutter, you’ll want to use it to craft most of your building supplies simply because you can get more for less. The Stonecutter works for all Stone-related blocks, as well as Copper, so take advantage as early as you can to preserve your resources. It might even be recommended to build one prior to you fully building your house (assuming you use Stone materials), so that you have an easier start to your world, particularly since the cost to craft a Stonecutter is so low.
