This stroke volume calculator will help you determine the amount of blood that is pumped by your heart in a single beat. This value is often used in anesthesiology to measure the recovery after anesthesia. If you wonder how to calculate the stroke volume manually, make sure to check out the stroke volume equations provided below.

What is the stroke volume?
Stroke volume is the amount of blood pumped by your heart in every beat. Each time the left ventricle contracts, it pushes blood from the heart to the aorta and toward the rest of the body.
Stroke volume equation
If you remember the definition of CO (find more in the cardiac output calculator), you already know that it is the volume of blood pumped by the heart during one minute. It is easy to convert this number into stroke volume. All you have to do is to divide this number by the number of beats per minute, estimated with the heart rate calculator.
Stroke volume=Cardiac outputHeart rate\footnotesize \text{Stroke volume} = \frac{\text{Cardiac output}}{\text{Heart rate}}The regular values of stroke volume are between 60 and 120 mL per beat.
Of course, your heart rate will vary depending on the level of physical activity. This way, your stroke volume will also increase. A normal level of training can cause your stroke volume to reach about 120 mL; if you are an athlete, you can expect numbers as high as 200 mL.
How to calculate the stroke volume index
You can also use this stroke volume calculator to find the stroke volume index, normalized with respect to the BSA (check the body surface area calculator). This way, you can easily compare your result with someone who has a different body type.
To find the stroke volume index, use the following formula:
Stroke volume index=Stroke volumeBSA\footnotesize \text{Stroke volume index} = \frac{\text{Stroke volume}}{\text{BSA}}Alternatively, you can use the cardiac index, which is equal to the cardiac output divided by BSA. Then, use the equation below:
Stroke volume index=Cardiac indexHeart rate\footnotesize \text{Stroke volume index} = \frac{\text{Cardiac index}}{\text{Heart rate}}FAQs
How can I determine the stroke volume value?
To determine the value of stroke volume, follow the steps below:
- Note down the cardiac output.
- Divide it by the heart rate.
- The result is the stroke volume value.
How can I use the stroke volume formula?
The stroke volume formula is:
Stroke volume = Cardiac output / Heart rate
So, all you have to do is divide the cardiac output by the heart rate, and you have the value for stroke volume.
What is the stroke volume if the cardiac output is 6 liters/minute?
The stroke volume is 75 ml if the cardiac output is 6 liters per minute(l/m) and assuming the heart rate is 80 beats per minute(bpm).
You can determine it by the formula:
Stroke volume = Cardiac output / Heart rate
Stroke volume = 6 / 80
Stroke volume = 0.075 liters
Stroke volume = 75 milliliters
Is cardiac output the same as cardiac index?
No, cardiac output and cardiac index are different.
Cardiac output is the flow rate of the heart. It tells how much blood the heart pumps in a minute.
While the cardiac index is the cardiac value per the body surface area.
