The Earth is expected to experience a solar storm on Tuesday, July 19. NASA have detected a coronal mass ejection that could cause major disruptions to several systems and functions in our daily lives.

Tamitha Skov, a researcher at the US Aerospace Corporation, has spoken about and warned of a solar flare in the shape of a snake on her Twitter profile.

According to Skov, it is heading towards Earth and NASA says it will hit our planet's magnetic field in the next few hours.

Effects of a solar storm

The consequences of this unusual event could be catastrophic, at least for a few hours.

Among the possible effects would be the failure of GPS systems, radio communications and satellites orbiting our planet. However, the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has not issued any warnings.

Solar storms are notable for their different levels, ranging from one to five (G1-G5), the latter being the most intense.

If severe, it could bring the internet down for months, although experts say this would be more likely to occur for just a few hours or days.

Why a solar storm occurs

This phenomenon occurs when the Sun's atmosphere ejects plasma, with the solar wind also carrying with it the solar magnetic field. These are known as coronal mass ejections and make up solar storms.

They do not always reach us, as they depend on the solar wind and where it blows them to. However, when they hit the Earth, they alter the magnetic field and geomagnetic storms occur.
