The Lumineers were formed by Wesley Schultz. Growing up in the New York City suburb of Ramsey, New Jersey, Wesley spent his days drawing with his childhood best friend, Josh Fraites. As entering his teen years, he then traded his pencil with a guitar, his drawings with songs, and played side by side with Josh's younger brother Jeremiah, who's a drummer.
It's never an easy road to get to where they are now. In 2002, the two were grieving the loss of Josh who died from a drug overdose at 19. They found solace in music, writing songs and playing at gigs around New York. After battling the city's cutthroat music scene and impossibly high cost of living, they packed their bags and a trailer full of musical instruments to move to Denver, Colorado.
Once they arrived in the new city, the duo looked for a cellist and met Neyla Pekarek, a classically-trained Denver native. Now a trio, they began playing at the city's local basement club and met the most talented songwriters who gathered every Tuesday for an open mic and dollar PBRs. They gradually took a new shape in their sound; a heart-swelling acoustic rock, classic pop/folk.
In 2011, they released an independent self-titled mini album "The Lumineers" which peaked at No. 8 on Billboard Hot 200. They charmed a large number of people and built a strong fan base with their first single "Ho Hey". It climbed to No. 3 on Hot 100, as well as reigned Alternative and Rock Single charts. They also busted the charts in Australia, UK, New Zealand and Canada.
Their massive success led them to get two Grammy nominations for the 2013 Grammy Awards. They are nominated for Best New Artist and their work is up for Best Americana Album. Furthermore, the band are booked for a musical guest at the popular variety show "Saturday Night Live". A full-length studio album is in the works and is expected to be released in April 2013.
