History[]
Wesley and Jeremiah have played music together since 2005, under different names such as Free Beer, 6Cheek, and Wesley Jeremiah. They became known as The Lumineers in 2009, when they were mistakenly announced as such at a club. The name does not have any literal meaning.[6]
The band, consisting of Wesley and Jeremiah, first toured in 2009. Neyla Peckarek joined the band in 2010, after responding to an advert seeking a cello player. Stelth Ulvang and Ben Wahamaki joined in 2012.[7][8] The band is influenced by Beethoven and Guns N' Roses.[9]
Their first single, "Ho Hey," was number one for eighteen non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard rock songs chart.[10]
The band worked with the company Yondr, to support the use of locking pouches that prevent people accessing their phones during live shows. Phones are inaccessible during the gig. If a fan needs access, they can leave the area. This prevents the unauthorised recording of new material. [11]
The Lumineers' wrote the melody for "The Hangige Tree," a song from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.[12]
In 2015, Jason Van Dyke, a New Jersey musician, filed a lawsuit claims he co-wrote songs with Wesley and Jeremiah, performed onstage with them, and was owed royalties and credit. They acknowledged knowing Jason, saying he responded to an advert in 2008, and performed with them. They said he "occasionally" rehearsed and performed with them in New York and New Jersey, but denied he co-wrote their songs.[13]
In October 2018, Neyla Pekarek left the band and pursued a solo career.[14]
Wesley and Jeremiah have released solo albums.[15] In October 2020, Wesley released Vignettes.[16] In March 2021, Jeremiah released Piano Piano.[17]
Albums and EPs[]
The Lumineers[]
The Lumineers’ self-titled debut album was released on April 3, 2012.[18][19] The cover has a picture of Wesley's mother, Judy, as a child, and her mother.[20]
Winter[]
The EP Winter was released on November 23, 2012.[21]
Cleopatra[]
Their second album, Cleopatra, was announced in February 2016, and released in April 2016. Wesley described it as “a heavier record.”[22] The album was followed by The Cleopatra World Tour.[citation needed]
In April 2017, the album was celebrated by the film "The Ballad Of Cleopatra," based on the story of ‘Cleopatra’, a real taxi driver, who declined a marriage proposal around the time of her father's death. Wesley and his wife came to know her through a friend, and she became, according to Wesley, “the bedrock of the album.”[23]
III[]
III was The Lumineers' third studio LP, announced in April 2019.[24][25]
It was delivered as three chapters in a short story, with music videos based on dysfunctional American families dealing with addiction.[26] Jeremiah said that addiction should be considered as happening in cycles. Jeremiah's brother, Josh, who became Wesley's childhood friend, died from drug addiction.[27]
C-Sides[]
In the summer of 2018, the band issued the three-track C-Sides EP.[28]
Brightside[]
Wesley said that a lack of "planning or choreography, [and] creating in real time"… "seeped into the making of Brightside."[29] The album was released on January 14, 2022.[30]
It was promoted with a billboard by YouTube Music.[31]
In May 2022, they released Brightside Bonus Tracks.[32]
Awards[]
In 2013, the band was nominated for Grammy Awards, for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album.[33]
