Does this happen to you?
Yes, farting during your workout is normal but if you are breaking wind a little too much or too frequently, you need to pay attention. It doesn’t feel great to have an uneasy stomach while you are running fast on the treadmill. And farting during a workout can make it embarrassing for not only you but also for the people around you.
2/7
Why does it happen?
Gas is actually produced by the microbes that live and thrive in our gut. These microbes eat the food that we are not able to digest and ferment it, which produces gas. Exercising can stimulate the movement of gas in our intestine, leading to farts. So, if you have eaten right before exercising, you might feel the gas bubbling even more.
Here are a few tips to get rid of the embarrassing farts during your next workout session:
3/7
Choose your carbs carefully before working out
We need carbs to fuel up our workout. But there are some types of carbs that produce more gas than the others.
Try avoiding carbs that get poorly absorbed and fermented by your body, a few hours before hitting the gym. These carbs include onion, beans, garlic and wheat. By reducing food for the gut microbes, you ultimately reduce the production of gas when you hit the gym.
You can opt for rice, oatmeal or potatoes for a fart-free workout.
4/7
Do not forget to take probiotics regularly
Eating probiotic rich food and beverages keeps your belly happy and lowers the risk of emitting gas during exercising. Imbalanced gut flora is the primary reason behind excessive gas production whether you are working out or not. Consume yoghurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut to balance your gut microbiome.
5/7
Stop having too much liquid
Staying hydrated is important but if you are not thirsty, you can avoid having any drinks in between your workout sessions. Believe us, this will reduce the production of gas. Gulping water in between workout means you are taking in air too. Though most of this air comes out through burps, some of it reaches your intestine. If you are doing a high-intensity workout, it is advisable to take a small break before drinking water. When you do so, you avoid taking in a lot of air with the water, which helps in avoiding flatulence.
6/7
Breathe mindfully
Reduce the amount of air that goes inside through your mouth and breathe through your nose. Or you may also take breaks where you can inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Excess air that comes in through your mouth may also lead to unwanted farts.
7/7
Let the gas out
Do you want to fart badly but are surrounded by a lot of people? Take a quick break and use the washroom. Doing so will make you feel comfortable for the rest of the workout session.
