Swallowing breath through the mouth while exercising can make you gassy.

Do you have the tendency to fart while working out? We have all been there, and there is nothing to feel embarrassed about farting during your sweat sessions. Flatulence during a workout is common. We have got gastroenterologist Dr Indraneel Saha to tell you what causes it and what you can do to stop passing gas at the gym.
- Your sweat sessions both aerobic and anaerobic exercises tend to speed up the digestive process helping food pass through faster through the digestive track and thus to release the gas that gets caught in the digestive tract.
- The pulsating effects of the vigorous exercises can trigger involuntary farting. Especially when you perform a workout squeezing those core muscles, you squeeze your colon too in the process pushing out the air through your digestive tract.
- Also, due to heavy breathing and swallowing air trough the mouth, the excess air can get trapped in the gastrointestinal tract only to be released through the anus. Here are 6 tried and tested home remedies for gas trouble.
While you cannot eliminate the likelihood of passing gas at the gym, you can make it less likely by following these tips.
- Do not gas producing foods such as lentils, wheat, corn and vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage before the workout. Brown rice, however, will provide you with complex carbohydrates and fibre without causing the unpleasant gassy side effects. Eating healthy can make you fart.
- Also, focus on your breathing during a workout and try to breathe in through your nose and not your mouth. That way you will swallow less air and in turn have less wind to release.
- Make sure that you do not drink carbonated water before, during and after the workout.
Note: Do not ever try to hold your fart no matter how embarrassing you feel as it may lead to bloating.
