According to Dictionary.com, the word we use today stems from the the Middle English word turmeryte, the Middle French word terremérite, and from Medieval Latin terra merita, which translates to "worthy earth."

And "worthy earth" is a pretty apt name for the herb. Turmeric's long resume of skills include: reducing skin inflammation, increasing metabolism to support weight loss, fighting bloating, and even improving brain function. (And it makes for a great face mask...)
