Tutorial: How to apply water slide decals
Intro: Water slide decals are my favorite type of decals to work with. So much so that I base some of my kit purchasing decisions on the availability of the kit's water slide decals! In my mind there are really two types of water slide decals available for Gundam kits; Bandai decals, and everything else. I'm not suggesting that Bandai water slides are better than every other decal available, but in general I have found that I have an easier time using Bandai's decals than say Samuel decals or other third party manufacturers.Comments
CherrycatDecember 12, 2012 at 7:42 PMThanks, Dan, for another terrific tut. I've been struggling with applying the water slide decals on my RG kits. I'm hoping to have better luck once I get to a bigger kit.

DerringerDecember 19, 2012 at 5:22 PMA gloss coat is usually recommended before applying decals because it provides a smoother surface and helps protect the paint job against the harshness of the decal solutions. Many have found that the Mr. Hobby line of decal solutions have a habit of eating through other paint brands, most notoriously the Alcad II line of high metallic finish paints.

If you apply a smooth base coat and you're careful with the Mr.Hobby solutions you can skip the gloss clear coat.

UnknownMarch 12, 2019 at 4:48 PMSo I'm extremely grateful for this tutorial but the one scares me the most is putting a water slide around an item ( like a gun barrel or fuel tank) for decal that goes ALL the way around and I haven't the slightest clue how to approach this

UnknownOctober 26, 2020 at 4:38 AMI have a question is there a way to print decals were just the decal comes off the paper like the ones you buy is it some kind of ink
ReplyDeleteRepliesGGDanDecember 22, 2020 at 10:37 AM
You can buy waterslide transfer paper for a laser jet printer. The problem is the printers that are capable of printing white are very expensive. Alternatively you can make you own waterslide decals using the dry transfer that Bandai includes in their MG line by transferring them to the waterslide paper.

DextriFebruary 24, 2021 at 2:22 AMWhen I leave my finger on the decal it comes off again. Is there a way to prevent that other than topcoating or not putting my finger on it?

DextriFebruary 24, 2021 at 2:21 AMHey, i have used Waterslides for the first time a few weeks ago. All went well but when i left my finger on a decal for a few seconds it just comes off. Is there a way to prevent that other than topcoating or just not touching it? I got Mark Softer but i didnt know how to use it at the time. Now i know thanks to your tutorial :D

Generally you need to avoid touching the decals until the kit has been topcoated. Otherwise they tend to lift right off.

KirdroJanuary 29, 2025 at 1:36 PMThanks for the tutorial, it was a lot of help! I found a trick to make it much less tedious. Use a wet palette (I've got one I use for D&D minis) to prep your decals. They stay perfectly wet, and you can keep track of them all much easier than in a cup. Now they're all there and ready to go as fast as you can apply them.

It seems like a lot of people really enjoyed the MG Ginn I posted a few days ago. Here's another MG I really enjoyed building and painting. And I hope you enjoy it too! More photos: goodguydangunpla.blogspot.com/2020/02/mg-s... #ガンプラ #ガンダム #gunpla #gundam[image or embed]
