Hi, When your soldering a fitting on a vertical pipe, how do you know that you've got a good joint (i.e say you're soldering a joint in the midle of the 2 pipes on a straight drop, the top join) ? will the solder not just flow down? Thanks Vijay M

Apply solder to top of fitting & hope it runs down! Apply heat until you've melted approx 1000mm of solder only joking. ha ha The solder joints are capillary fittings, so apply to top & bottom of fitting, hey presto it'll disappear up & down into the joint D

Steady on mj, thats what we told an apprentice to do once. He had a load of solder on the floor but he had sliightly overheated the job. We used oxy-acetalene for soldering in the factory. E

I always put a ring of Plumbers Mate just below the bottom vertical joint. I find that this helps to keep the solder in place. G

When your soldering a fitting on a vertical pipe, how do you know that you've got a good joint (i.e say you're soldering a joint in the midle of the 2 pipes on a straight drop, the top join) ? will the solder not just flow down? If you use the pre-soldered fittings which contain the solder then you won't have a problem - just heat the joint and stop when you see the silver ring appear on the joint interface. The solder only takes to clean surfaces on which flux has been applied, so if you limit the flux to just the area where you want to see solder on the final joint you shouldn't have a problem. Remember that when soldering joints you almost always need only a dab of solder to make the joint - if you keep feeding the solder into the joint after the minimum required then it has to go somewhere, and that could be in the direction that gravity dictates! It's one of these situations which experience helps a lot. Gotcher M

use yorkshire fitting then and solder, the amount of solder used, usually for end feed is equall to the diameter of the pipe,ie 15 22 mm.use a touch less on yorkshire, use a small brush to clean up the excess solder on the pipealternatively by a reverse gravity sucktion machine powered with a dilithium crystal[osolating],must admit you would be best to hire a plumber if you can ask such a question M
