   SR5 has come to mean the trim level which includes power windows, power locks, etc. Back in the old days, when SR5 was first used, it symbolized that said vehicle was equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, which was a big deal, because most everything else only had 4 speeds.

   On a taco, its just a trim/option level. Years back, a sports option package for the old Corolla SR5 (early 70s I think). S was sport, R was the new higher hp engine and 5 was the tranny - 5 speed. Nice quick little car - but they still rusted faster than their 1/4 mile times. bluejays[OP] initial post: ↑

   What does SR5 mean anyways ? (Toyota Historical Background) In the latter part of the 1970's, the SR5 connotation denoted an option code for the HiLux series of trucks, similar to what the Z71 option code currently means for an upgraded Chevy or GMC pickup or Tahoe/Yukon. Originally released around 1975, the 'S' denoted Sport, 'R' denoted the RN motor code, and '5' denoted the 5-speed transmission. It quickly caught on and the SR5 connotation passed onto the Corolla and then onto other Toyota car models. Even though the HiLux name was dropped in 1979 for the United States market, it is still used today elsewhere in the world as the name for a Tacoma-like pickup and/or the 4Runner, depending on the market. Note: Some other historical information shows that the Corolla had the "SR5" designation first, then it was passed on to the HiLux series. The majority of historical information seems to promote the HiLux first, then the Corolla, rather than vice-versa. Today, the SR5 generally denotes a specifc Toyota trim level, with a more sporty look and wide flexibility for options.     To answer you question about the airbags though, that is SRS (Suplemental Restraint System). In some fonts S and 5 look similar.

    That is correct. Back in the early '80s, when the SR5 trim package came available, it stood for Sport Rally 5-speed.

    The Toyota Hilux, and Toyota Tacoma, are compact pickup trucks built and marketed by the Toyota Motor Corporation. The Hilux name was adopted as a replacement for the Stout in 1969, and remains in use worldwide. In North America, the Hilux name was retired in 1976 in favor of Truck, Pickup Truck, or Compact Truck, until it was renamed the Tacoma in 1995. One popular option package, SR5 (Sport Rally), also became synonymous with the truck, even though it was used on other Toyota models as well.Click to expand...

    I can't say if what I posted is 100% accurate but the historial information info is from Dianne Whitmire at Carson Toyota as well as ToyotaOffRoad.com. Seems to be two credible Toyota sources.

    back in the day it was Sports Rally 5-speed. Now its nothing more than the power package (windows, locks) and upgraded cloth. And on the reg cabs, you get buckets with an SR5, instead of the standard bench.
