As of November 2015, SuperTargets differ from regular Targets in that they are considerably larger and the only Targets with in-house bakeries and delis. Launched in 1995, SuperTargets used to be the only Target stores that included groceries in general, but in 2009, groceries were added at hundreds of Target locations nationwide without the SuperTarget branding.

The first SuperTarget opened in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1995, with more than 200 others opening over the next decade. Until the expansion of groceries into regular Targets in 2009, these stores offered everything found in a regular Target, plus groceries; they were also considerably larger, with the largest location at 204,000 square feet.

Regular Target locations that now feature groceries are known as PFresh stores. They do not include in-house bakeries and delis, but sell pre-packaged food to eliminate the need for weight-based pricing. General-merchandise Targets without groceries are still in operation and are generally about 1,500 square feet smaller than PFresh locations.

Many SuperTargets also feature amenities like Starbucks Coffee, Pizza Hut Express, Taco Bell Express, Target Pharmacy, a portrait studio, Target Optical, Target Mobile, and a Wells Fargo or U.S. Bank branch. Many of these features are also available in the PFresh Target locations.
