What Pound Test? [Archive] - Walleye Message Central

Walleye Message Central > Walleye Message Central > Strictly Fishing > What pound test? PDA What pound test? anglerjake04-18-2016, 12:44 PMI normally use 6# mono for nearly all the fishing I do. Wanting to try braid. Should I use the same pound test? Will be on a Ci4+ reel and a light action rod. Thanks! REW04-18-2016, 12:53 PMUse 10 lb power pro and you will be good to go. Some of the lighter lb braids are either so thin or slim that they can sometime jam into the spool and cause issues. However, the 10 lb power pro, is nice and round and handles very nicely on reels. Be safe Jfraze1004-18-2016, 12:57 PMI use 6lb Fireline for jigging would go with a 10lb power pro or sufix for trolling brmoffatt04-18-2016, 01:42 PM10# power pro on a light action rod is excessive. Sufix came out last year with some spinning reel braid and it is really good stuff. Stick with 4 or 6# in the Nanobraid. I use the 6# in this for several rigs. http://www.cabelas.com/product/sufix-174-nanobraid-nanofilament-braid/1998109.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3D searchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProduc ts%26Ntt%3Dnanobraid%26x%3D10%26y%3D6%26WTz_l%3DHe ader%253BSearch-All%252BProducts&Ntt=nanobraid Rez Eyes04-18-2016, 01:51 PMI just became a huge fan of Power Pro line. I spooled some 10lb slick 8 onto my jigging rod and I was anchored up pitchin jigs on the Missouri river, I straightened 2 jig hooks and pulled 2 size 10 swivels straight and the line still didn't give. Not only the strength but this line cast so smooth im getting at least 25% more distance on casts with less effort. And I also now use the 10lb Power Pro Spectra on my trolling, bottom bouncing, cranking, bait rods. Love it. revolutionz04-18-2016, 02:10 PMI've been using braid for the last couple years and don't think I'll ever switch back. Strong, no line memory so you can keep it on the spool for years, and if you need some clear I just tie a floro or mono leader on the end of it. I generally use 10-12lb braid with 10lb mono for a leader if I feel I need it. All my reels are spooled with suffix or power pro. Thaddeus04-18-2016, 04:00 PMI use 8lbs PP on my light and medium light sticks. 10lbs PP for my medium rods. If you have a rod with recoil guides get the PP super slick version. Best braid I've used with recoils. Very, very quiet. port104204-18-2016, 04:54 PMI'm going to try braid this year. When your talking about the weight, which weight are you talking about? I bought a spool of Suffix 832. It's marked "30lb - 8# mono equiv.". Is this what I want to spool on my med. weight spinning set-up? Normally I'd spool that rod with 8# mono. I'm a 10# test yellow power pro guy for my jigging, rigging and blade bait rods.... then 15# (green) for bottom bouncing and trolling cranks, although I could see myself going to 10 on those as well. When making the change from mono to braid be very aware of your hook sets and snags. The stretch is all gone, so there's no longer a need for sweeping hook sets. Those will either rips the hooks free or potentially snap your rod if you end up setting your hook into some rocks. A relatively short simple snap of the wrist will give you a great hook set. patroller04-18-2016, 08:17 PM10 lb. Power Pro or Suffix 832. No problems just better performance. I can understand it for jigging but for throwing cranks, trolling and BB, I wouldnt consider anything less than 30lbs in braid. Unless I suppose I was heir to the Rapala estate. anglerjake04-19-2016, 06:52 AMThanks everyone! cutting edge04-19-2016, 07:21 AM8 or 10 # Power Pro or 832 or 6# Fireline crystal would work great for your combo. No need for 30 # braid as zeebee recommended, since I seriously doubt you will be trolling or BB with your light action rod. Good Luck! Bill Krejca04-19-2016, 07:53 AMKeep in mind that the reason light mono line such as 4# test was/is being used is because very light baits cannot be cast easily or very far with heavier mono line. Generally, light mono line is not used to provide some other intrinsic value other than cast ability. Because braid is much smaller in diameter, a heavier pound test braid can be used with about equal or greater utility than mono. But.. if the desired effect is have a faster sinking bait, then the smallest diameter braid would be advisable - this probably is not high on the list for most normal fishing situations. Final logic = If 4# mono would have been previously used, move up to 8 or 10# braid. Bill revolutionz04-19-2016, 09:44 AMI also use braid to tie leaders. I use 50# suffix 832 for a leader, and I only lost 1 crankbait to a northern last year. Allows the lures to have a much more natural presentation than a steel leader and still have enough cut and abrasion resistance to work for them toothy critters. zeebee04-19-2016, 07:01 PM8 or 10 # Power Pro or 832 or 6# Fireline crystal would work great for your combo. Seriously.....you should peruse the recommendations that suggested 10 lbs for BB and trolling. My post was directed at those comments. kzoofisher04-19-2016, 07:35 PMFor light rods it's easy to over power them with braid and break the rod. Don't exceed the line weight rating of the rod and you'll be fine. You'll find that the braid casts further than you are used to, cuts the water better, is more sensitive and really buries the hook on a set. Minuses are that it is not at all abrasion resistant so you need to check it often, you can easily get loops because it is so limp so hand closing the bail and carefully picking up slack is a good idea, it's slippery and some knots work better than others (uni & palomar for me), some braids are loud. Dabluz05-07-2016, 05:57 PMUsually means that its the Diameter equiv of 8 lb mono Do not be fooled by the companies. The new lines made of dyneema or the other one who I can't remember right now are actually 40% stronger than good mono. When they say equivalent to 8 lb mono, they are talking about very large mono. IGFA mono is very large. Yes, it's breaking strength is well monitored but the large size is there to absorbe a lot of abrasion. So....20 llb Power Pro is more equal in size to good 12 lb mono. I have been fishing heavily for over 60 years and have used lots of different lines. The only really bad woven line was Remington Braid from when it first came out. I prefer woven lines to be uncoated. I have some Mason Tiger braid that is uncoated and even some uncoated Tuff line. They are very limp but cast great on baitcasters. On spinning reels, I use original Fireline that I bought when it first came out many years ago and it is still going strong. Most of my fishing is with 2 lb and 4 lb Sensithin and 3 lb test Tectan. For walleye, I use 4 and 6 lb Sensithin copolymer. Sensithin is now called Sensation. I don't know why there was a name change. scobec05-10-2016, 07:04 AMWhat's everyone's favorite knots for tying a leader on to the braided line? Mojo126905-10-2016, 08:55 AMWhat's everyone's favorite knots for tying a leader on to the braided line? Palomar...hands down if you are using a connector (swivel). Blood Knot or Double Uni if you are going Line to Line. Thaddeus05-10-2016, 10:11 AMdon't need to tie leaders. use the smallest spro swivel. size 10 I think. only using a 12-36" leader... Douglas6305-15-2016, 07:56 AMHello everyone This will be my first time using braided line. I'm going to try 2 types of braided line in 10 pound test. Sufix 832 and Power Pro. Both used for jigging. Only been Walleye fishing for a few times, real rookie at this! I think I'm going to attach a fluorocarbon leader. Lots of snags. I have read braided line is difficult to break. Do you match the leader to the diameter of the braided line or the pound of the braided line? Is Fluorocarbon better than mono for leader? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks RustyTackleBox05-15-2016, 03:28 PMI've used power pro for 15ish years, I use the slick 8 now in the brown color #15 and I just tie directly to my jig and have no problems catching walleye sometimes I just attach my my jig to my swivel sometimes I tie direct sometimes I use a leader... i have not noticed a difference with a mono or floro leader or direct tie... tbh the last 3 eyes I caught (when everyone was saying it was a dead sea post spawn) my jig was hooked on by the swivel Hammer Tyme05-16-2016, 06:06 AMFor tying a leader either 2 uni knots or what I will be trying is a Crazy Alberto knot. I have a chunk of dowel rod in the boat for snags. Wrap the line around it about 5 or 6 times and pull with that. The line breaks at the knot and won't cut your hand up or bust up your reel. RustyTackleBox05-16-2016, 08:08 AMi would use a double uni... but i would more than likely use a swivel and then a short leader to a jig (faster jig swaps = more time in the water)
