What's The Reason Why Albus Dumbledore Hired... - Potter Archives

Gilderoy Lockhart was the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, book 2 of the HP series by J.K. Rowling. But we all know how incompetent Lockhart really is and it’s easily seen in the way he acts and carries himself so how come headmaster Albus Dumbledore decided to hire him?
What reason did Albus Dumbledore have to hire Gilderoy Lockhart?
Simon (&SimeyC):
Albus Dumbledore always seems to do things for a reason - there are several ‘hires’ he makes that don’t seem to make sense, but when you see the full picture, Harry wouldn’t have ultimately succeeded without these teachers in his life - perhaps J K Rowling gave Dumbledore a little too much 'foresight’ though …
How does hiring Gilderoy Lockhart help Harry Potter?
Freya Yuki:
I agree with what you said about Dumbledore having way too much foresight. There are many things he does that doesn’t make sense at all like deciding to hire Lockhart. It’s also hard to see exactly how this decision (having Lockhart as a DADA teacher) could have helped Harry in any way.
Isn’t it highly unlikely that Harry learned anything from Lockhart? And, when Harry and Ron brought Lockhart with them to help with the basilisk, wasn’t Lockhart more trouble than he was worth? After all, the guy tried to erase the memories of the 2 and he didn’t end up helping them at all (since Harry was the one who had to deal with the basilisk and the diary pretty much all by himself).
ExplanationThe comments on this post are in response to this one back when it was originally posted elsewhere. The comment by Simon (&SimeyC) and my response have been transcribed as-is. The only additions were the introductory text, headings and paragraph spacing to make it easier to read and the links for those who may be interested in reading more.

Results of the Hermione Granger Smart Student Poll
In the post entitled “How Come No One Else Knows About Remus Lupin Being a Werewolf?”, I added an Opinion Stage poll.

For reasons that I’ll talk about in another post on another one of my blogs, I’ve decided to delete the Opinion Stage poll and replace it with one from SurveyMonkey instead.
The poll in question was created on 19 July 2015.

On my dashboard on the Opinion Stage site, the statistics page for this poll looks like this:

The full title of this post is “Why did Albus Dumbledore leave baby Harry Potter on the doorstep of the Dursleys’ house?”
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, book 1 of the HP series by J.K. Rowling, we found out that Headmaster Dumbledore decided to leave baby Harry on the doorstep of his relatives’ house after his parents, James Potter and Lily Evans, died.
Dumbledore explained that he decided to leave Harry with Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley Dursley because of the blood wards.

IMHO, I think he could have gone with some other way to keep Potter safe. I talk more about this here and here.
The question though is how come Albus Dumbledore couldn’t even be bothered to tell the Dursleys himself that he wanted Harry to live with them now?
He was already right there in front of their house. How come he couldn’t even knock and spare a few minutes to explain the situation to them?

I added a poll to this post I wrote about “What Albus Dumbledore Should Have Done to Protect the Sorcerer’s Stone?” The article used to be published on HubPages (it was first posted on on 10/01/2014), but I decided to move it to my Potter Plotholes Tumblr blog instead.

The full title is “1 Way to get Dolores Umbridge to actually teach Defense Against the Dark Arts”. As in actually teach the Hogwarts students how to use spells, how to fight, and how to defend themselves instead of just sitting on their desks reading.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, book 5 of the HP series by J.K. Rowling, Dolores Umbridge became the Defense Against the Dark arts teacher in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

But she’s really more interested in telling the students that the Dark Lord Voldemort hadn’t returned than in teaching.
Harry Potter tried to convince Professor Umbridge that he wasn’t lying and that Voldemort really was back.
But she kept denying this and insisting that the students didn’t need to learn how to fight because there was no danger.
When she said that, how come no one said anything about Sirius Black? The Ministry of Magic knew about him and they consider him a danger, right?

Got another email about receiving another reply to this post.

Agree @harry-potter-fans394. I also find it hard to believe that no one else ever figured out that Remus Lupin was a werewolf.
This doesn’t seem to make sense especially when considering the fact that Lily Evans and the Ravenclaws were said to be smart.

And what about the rest of the Hogwarts students from the other houses? Wasn’t there at least one person who noticed something strange about Lupin?
What about the other Gryffindors who interacted with him or students who shared classes with him? Didn’t they notice anything?

What does everyone else think about this? Feel free and welcome to share your thoughts and opinions by leaving a comment or by answering the poll below.
Keep reading 10 July 2018 11:29 pm Results Of The Harry Potter Winning The Triwizard Tournament PollI’ve written a lot of posts about the Triwizard Tournament. One was this article, which talks abut why Harry Potter tried so hard to win said competition.
This didn’t seem to make sense because Harry made no secret of the fact that he didn’t want to join, and he was adamant that didn’t put his name in the Goblet of Fire.

If Potter had no interest in the tournament, and he was competing only because of the so-called magical binding contract, then how come he did his best to win?
How come he exerted so much effort in trying to get through each of the three tasks? Wouldn’t it have been better, not to mention safer, if he’d just done the bare minimum to satisfy the contract?
What if he didn’t bother to use his broom to help him get the egg from the dragon in the first task? What if he didn’t bother using gillyweed in the second task? What if he didn’t bother trying to get through the maze in the third task?
What if he just made a token effort in all the tasks? For example, in the third task, what if he just tried running around the maze a few times, making a show of attempting to find the way out.

When Harry fails, what if he just leaves it at that? He tried to get the cup, and he didn’t succeed. Shouldn’t he be okay with that?
Anyway, I added an Opinion Stage poll to the post in question. For reasons that I’ll talk about in another post on another one of my blogs, I’ve decided to delete the Opinion Stage poll and replace it with one from SurveyMonkey instead. The poll in question was created on 26 Sep 2014.
