When did your baby clap? Wave? High five?

People seem to expect my baby to do these things ... not sure if it is because babies his age usually do, because he is big and looks older, or because they just forget ... he doesn't do any of them.

My baby clapped and high fived pretty reliably starting around 11mos/1 year. I'm still waiting for a wave and he's 13.5 mos.

Mine is nine months. She waved at 5.5 months, clapped at 7 months and hasn't high fived yet.

My 9 month old does all that...he even yells "yeah" when he high fives.

Don't sweat it. There's a wide range of normal for these things. DD waved at 7 months and clapped at 9 months. Not sure when she caught on to the high five.

My DD clapped around 9 months but refused to wave until around 13 months (and initially she only waved her hand toward herself rather than toward the person she was greeting). She started high-fiving around 18 months. She's a late bloomer but she seems to get to everything eventually.

Hmm...see I interpret the "when did she wave" question as - when did the baby wave and correctly associate the action of waving with saying hello or goodbye. I think that happens much later than 5.5 months. Maybe I'm misreading that one though.

My DD is 13 months and caught on to the high five first (mainly because she loved how excited we got when she did it). She has just started to wave on a consistent basis and knows that it happens when she hears "hi" or "bye bye" (she could wave before now, however, I am not sure she knew what she was doing). She started clapping around 10 months.

Clapping at about 9mos. Waving "sort of" around 10mos, but not consistently so I'm not sure it counts yet. High 5 we're still working on also at 10mos.

Waving around 6 months or so. Clapping around 8-9 months. High 5s around 10 months to a year. I think young babies can associate waving with hello/goodbye if it's used consistently that way. Afterall, infants can have their first signs around 5-8 months. Oldest had his first signs at 5 months (milk and hello/goodbye), youngest at 8 months.

OP here. DS is 8.5 months so I feel better knowing lots of babies aren't doing these things at this age. He looks older so maybe that is part of why people seem to expect these behaviors from him ...

I think people also forget how old their babies were when they did some of these things. FWIW, my DS is 11 months. I think he clapped around 8 or 9 months. He's waved a few times and it may or may not have been because we were leaving. No high fiving yet, but we've never really done it with him. He started pointing about a week ago (although he doesn't extend his finger, just sort of extends his arm and turns his palm out and upside down). He hasn't clapped a lot lately, but I think he's been concentrating on his new skill - shaking his head "no."

Clapped and waved hello ~10, 11 months. High five only around 15 months.

clapped at 6 months. high fived at 7 (b/c daycare taught him), still hasn't waved (12 months) except sometime to imitate me (but not hello. goodbye).

We're just now at 14-15 months being able to clap, high five, and blow kisses reliably. He'd practice some around 13ish months when he thought we weren't looking!
