We know what you’re thinking, how can it already be the end of summer when we haven’t even had one yet?

This August has been lacking in scorching sunshine, and despite the odd bright spell, it was mostly categorised by wet and windy conditions.

For many, the summer has been a bit of a letdown, and there are only a few weeks until it’s officially over for another year.

But when does the summer officially end?

Summer will officially end on Wednesday, September 22 2021.

Those hoping that the last weeks of summer will bring with it better weather than August best not hold their breath, as more rain and wind is currently predicted for September.

Alex Burkill, a Met Office forecaster, said: ‘It’s fair to say the beginning of the month will be rather settled, with high pressure dominating.

‘There will be drizzle and cloud in the east this week, but in the west, certain regions will certainly hit the low 20s and see glimpses of sunshine here and there,’ he said.

‘However, this could perhaps be the last of the summery weather until the end of September, with a prolonged spell of unsettled conditions and low pressure from Sunday.’

The rainfall in August saw devastating flash flooding across London, making many concerned for more heavy rainfall over the next month.

The last day of summer and the beginning of autumn is also known as the autumnal equinox.

There are two equinoxes every year – in September and March – when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal.

In the UK, the 2021 autumnal equinox will occur on September 22 at 7:21pm.
