It is well known that almost every high school in NZ are losing their minds over the battle with chewing gum. Who would have guessed that one, such tiny, irrelevant, tasteless piece of rubber can cause such controversy and create so many problems for the young consumers? Detentions, frequent meetings with your Dean, cleaning desks are some of the many punishments designed to help you cure and overcome your addiction to chewing gum. But is this really beneficial to us? It is not known by many but chewing gum is proven to bring along many benefits to the chewer. It does not only improve concentration levels but actually improves the impression others have on you but a simple piece of bubble gum could be recycled and contribute to the making of …show more content…
Parents and teachers believe that gum is something that is bad for the health due to the fact that gum is one of the only confectionary that can not be consumed. The truth is chewing gum is proven to bring along numerous benefits to the mental and physical health of the chewer. According to the British Journal of Psychology they state that “chewing gum can help you stay focused for longer on tasks that require continuous monitoring.” Under a test where Professor Kate Morgan did a study on 38 participants; each sitting through a 30 minute audio exam. Professor Morgan discovered that students that had chewed gum during the exam stayed focused for longer than those that didn’t. In fact chewing gum causes our heart to pump more blood to our brain due to the movement and stimulation of the jaw, more blood means more oxygen that nourishes our brains allowing them to function more efficiently. It also increases the student’s glucose levels, making the student more alert and able to pick up important details and the rhythmic chewing increases the attention of the chewer as you may or …show more content…
One of the reasons why teachers and parents disagree to chewing gum is that it gives a negative image and symbolises delinquency, thus this has resulted in gum being banned in schools to ensure students look “smart” and give the school a “good” image, the truth is that chewing gum actually makes others have a better impression towards you. In a test held by “Beldent” they asked a total of 481 people to take a test in selecting which of the identical twins was more favourable in society, during the experiment one twin was chewing gum and the other did not candidates would be asked questions and pick the twin that would fit the description the most. The results of the test showed that 78% of the people voted for the twin that was chewing gum and more favoured to be exciting, nicer and a “better” person of society overall. The long believed idea of “gum is only chewed by delinquents” or that chewing gum is disgusting is a lie that we have been told all our lives by our parents, teachers and adults. They have been oblivious to the fact that someone is more likely to approach someone that chews gum than one who is dressed up in a tie, wearing his 80’s glasses and holding his binder folder. Teachers and adults must accept the idea that chewing gum is not an immoral act! Many adults only relate gum to the sticky sick slimy “bloob” under desks all

Not only will the whole classroom sound like cows, but it will turn into a garbage can for students. E-cigarettes may be less harmful than cigarettes, but still don’t know enough about their long-term risks or the effect of secondhand exposure. E-cigarettes have triggered a fierce debate among health experts who share the same goal, reducing the disease and death caused by tobacco. But they disagree about whether e-cigarettes make the problem better or worse. “Some affect brain development in children and teens,” Drummond says. Some e-cigarettes have candy flavoring, which could make them appealing to

Should Gum Be Allowed At School?
Should Gum Be Allowed At School?
One reason why I believe gum should be allowed at school is because studies have proven that it increases grade point average. Baylor College of Medicine studied 108 eighth graders for 14 straight weeks. Half of them chewed gum during school work and homework while the other half didn’t. They noticed a three percent raise in the grades of those who chewed gum. If we were allowed to chew gum during school work and tests but then had to spit it out at the door when class was over, our grades would also have the chance to increase. For this reason I believe that chewing gum would be beneficial to students with memory problems that need a little extra boost to help them reach their full potential. This way teachers and students would both benefit for this new rule.

As stated earlier, chewing gum can help students focus. "Chewing gum is an easy tool students can use for a potential academic edge," which is what Craig Johnston, Ph.D., the lead researcher and an instructor in nutrition at the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, says. This evidence point to the fact that students who chew gum involved fewer breaks, paid more attention and stayed quiet during more or the class than students who didn't. In another study, Kim Morgan, the author of the study, states that ”It's been well established by previous research that chewing gum can benefit some areas of cognition. In our study we focussed on an audio task that involved short-term memory recall to see if chewing gum would improve concentration; especially in the latter stages of the task. (Kate Morgan, 2013)" The results of the study showed the participants who chewed gum had quicker reactions and more accurate results. Morgan explained at the end “Interestingly

Chewing Gum Should Be Allowed In School
Sitting in five classes a day for times ranging from 55 to 70 minutes, it is a battle of the will to stay on task. Whether distracted by the middle schoolers playing, carefree, on the green or the clicking of someone’s pen, it takes true willpower to not shift focus. What if there was a simple way to help students with this? It turns out, there is: gum. Kate Morgan, the author of a gum chewing study in British Journal of Psychology, proved that "Interestingly participants who didn't chew gum performed slightly better at the beginning of the task but were overtaken by the end. This suggests that chewing gum helps us focus on tasks that require continuous monitoring over a longer amount of time." It is a true enigma that despite scientific results, Episcopal still bans chewing gum in school. This year, a plethora of students have aimlessly drifted through never ending science and math

After completing the research that I did for this essay, I can see clearly that it is not just myself that I am hurting when I use tobacco on campus, but that I am hurting other students that are just trying to get an education, and also am hurting my schools reputation by now having people think that Coastal Carolina University is a smoking school with a non-tobacco free campus. I now realize how much harm can come from using tobacco, no matter what form it is in, on my college campus.

The Dangers Of Smoking Tobacco
The Dangers Of Smoking Tobacco
Tobacco; one of the most profitable products in history, an addictive substance, and a deadly killer. Smoking tobacco used to be a thing that was endorsed in American society. Now, with the new medical advances and knowledge, society has seen the side effects of smoking and how fatal it actually is. Teenagers have been one of the largest age groups that have been affected by smoking. After analyzing all possible reasons as to why teenagers would smoke while knowing it can affect their health, three possible reasons stuck out the most. Teenagers smoke despite knowing the health problems that originate from smoking because of peer pressure, an “invincibility” mentality, and seeing a role model or family member smoke.
