Happosai is such a shit character that when a tv station in my country was airing the show (afternoon time), they got a fine from the goverment because in one episode Ranma, as a girl, passed out for whatever reason (i think she drank something if my memory is correct), happosai being alone with her was going to grope her and Akane kicks him to the stratosphere in the last second, you know, your typical "comedy bit". However, the scene didn't played out as your typical "haha, i'm just doing some pervy stuff, just beat the shit out of me and everything is fine", it really shown a piece of shit who was going to sexually abuse a girl who had no means to defend herself, even for me who, at that time, was used to watch in anime those kind of scenes, didn't feel right at all. He should be erased from the universe along with the small dude of my hero academia.

At it's worst in the og Dragon Ball, he's handsy, he oggles teenagers and it's vile. He is grabby in Z but has less screen time so it falls to the background. Super had him "train" his perversion away but used an insanely problematic episode to get there, where he sexually assaults Puar (who has transformed into a human woman to train him) as they are trapped in a room together. Naruto Jiraiya. Naruto uses a "sexy jutus" to appear as a nude woman as a means to manipulate adults and even uses this to goad Jiraiya into training him, which is gross. Jiraiya is also introduced as a character who peeps on bath houses and writes erotic novels. His perversion is treated as a character flaw, Naruto brands him as Ero-Senin/Perverted Hermit (Pervy Sage in the dub) for the rest of the series and in the canon, the perverted moments are dropped wholesale instead focusing on other elements of Jiraiya's personality, his history with other ninja, etc. The series growing out of this joke was appreciated. Though there is one last gag at the end. As a throwback to the original series, Naruto does a sexy jutsu while fighting the final villain but it's a yaoi harem.

NOPE. One Piece One Piece does the opposite of Naruto. It gets more perverted as the series progresses. Sanji is initially introduced as a likable chef with a penchant for kicking and a passion for food. He believes that no one deserves to go hungry, no matter who they are or what they've done and it drives his character. A passing joke is made that he flirts with all the women at the restaurant no matter the age, shape or status and he has an immediate crush on Nami when they first meet. In the next two arcs, he does a cartoony squiggly body wave with heart-eyes every time he sees Nami, he starts calling her "my sweet" and "my little swan". Then they introduce Robin, who Sanji repeats these behaviors with. Then Sanji is shown peaking in on women bathing. Then Sanji starts obsessing with Nami's body, comments and stares at her body when she is in a bikini and starts yelling at her when she puts on a jacket (and keeps bringing it up). Then he starts discriminating women over their age and body shape (so much for that comment in the restaurant). It somehow keeps getting worse, Sanji becomes a full-on nose-bleed pervert trope and has an entire arc about why it's his sole motivation in life to be able to "perv on women in the bathroom". Every character moment with him has to do with him oggling a woman, hitting on Nami and Robin, trying to spy on women changing or bathing or even wanting a special power so he can do these things. That's not even to speak of his incel/MRA status as a self-described chivalrous gentleman who won't fight a woman or let a woman go into battle. I fucking hate him. Brook and Frankie are also treated as perverts but they are nowhere near Sanji's level. Brook asks women to see their panties or inquires as to the color of their undergarments as an introduction whenever he meets them for the first time. It really takes away from his character as he isn't presented as a "pervert trope" beyond this. Oda seems to use it as evidence of a "gentleman skeleton who is very rude", grouping it in with Brook inviting himself over dinner, burping/farting, asking strangers to borrow money. Frankie calls himself a pervert but won't hit on women or peep, he gets his underwear stolen through no fault of his own and is called a pervert by townspeople. He later hears enemies calling their vehicles a "convert" and insecurely thinks they are calling him a pervert but so far (I'm at Sabaody) he thankfully isn't an actual pervert. Beyond that, tons of side characters are perverts, one character in Thriller Bark goes to some sexual assault territory multiple times and Oda keeps increasing the chest size and decreasing the waists of his characters. One Piece fans keep warning me that all of this is going to keep getting worse so I'm wondering if I bail eventually as I did with MHA. My Hero Academia Mineta is garbage and gets worse to the point of full-on sexual assault. Between him and Bakugo, I had to bail. I used to think that it was a sexual urge brought on by the power of his opponent. ...but then there's that scene of him staring at Killua and Gon's butts and licking his chops. The camera zooms in to remove any confusion over what Hisoka is interested in. Kind of disturbing.

But as soon as a woman shows up he turns into a creep. It didn't help that the writer has Q&A columns where he and teenage boys frequently perv over the female characters.

Yeah...she's obsessed with him too. There are a few weird adult-underage child love/lust stories peppered throughout HxH. It's my only real issue with the series in terms of problematic content and I don't understand why it's a theme.

Glad it's not just me. Thank you. I got passively questioned about this a few times but for the reasons quoted above it is actively ruining my enjoyment of One Piece to the point that I might drop it completely.

It was already a popular type in comedy manga though. and it'd be hard to track down the origins of that, but Dragonball going from comedy to action focus and then blowing up in popularity basically transplanted that character type to shounen action manga. You can see that other action manga from the 80s didn't really have that type (Saint Seiya, Jojo, FotNS...). it was something that became common after Dragonball specifically.

I'm quite shocked at how perverted it is. I'm 10 episodes in, and every single episode has had some gag revolving around sexually assaulting Bulma, basically. The worst ones were from that turtle hermit guy who wouldn't give Bulma his dragon ball until she showed him her panties, and he wouldn't put out a fire until she let him touch her boobs. She's only 16 too. I think I might give up on Dragon Ball because of this, actually. Does anyone have a recommendation for a long running anime that isn't perverted, and also is a little more targeted towards adults? Or does the not exist? I'd settle with just not perverted.

I believe the stuffed bear has some pervy moments, but thankfully, his character isn't 100% dedicated to just hitting on the women. As for One Piece, it's been years so maybe I'm just misremembering.

I'd recommend the new Hunter x Hunter or Bleach. However, while Bleach doesn't have dedicated perv characters (that I recall), it does have a handful of characters with absolutely atrocious designs meant to show off T&A.

Yeah, Franky is a pervert in the "Goes into public in his underwear" sense and not the creeping on women sense. Plus the hentai/henshin joke (which I guess became convert/pervert in English). There is a part in Dressrosa where he and a villain are trying to "out-manliness" each other that ends up being somewhat misogynistic, but otherwise Franky is generally handled well (though some of it might just be that he gets less screentime than the other Strawhats).

Cool, Saint Seiya sounds interesting, and I see it has 300 episodes across a few series. I'll switch to that one for now. About DBZ, I might try coming back to Dragon Ball again sometime. I do like the concept of it, with the whole power levels and whatnot.

Mineta can fuck off the planet along with Bakugo and MHA would be a vastly better series. I have nothing against sexy characters or settings in shows (In fact, if there's a fantasy battle show with clear adults who are sexy or sexy stuff happens, GO FOR IT!), but when the characters are freaking teenagers and there are lines being crossed it sours great shows massively, all to appeal to slobbering morons. And the worst part is that it limits demographic appeal, and it becomes a spiralling cycle of appealing to trash tastes except when a mega hit show emerges every couple of years or so.

In Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress, a film from the 50's, there's a scene that is intended to be humorous where two characters discuss drawing straws to rape a sleeping woman. So it seems it has a long history and did not just start with anime. It's also the #1 reason I struggle with a lot of animes, especially My Hero Academia; I don't wanna watch a show that constantly sexualizes underage high school girls and see some weirdo pervert get handsy with them.

Same. It's frustrating because the non-pervy Sanji scenes are some of my favorites in the series...but then the perv stuff always pops back in...

What sucks about his character in particular in comparison to Jiraiya/Roshi is that those two are otherwise useful. they're mentors to the main character and can hold their own in a fight. They eventually became characatures doing nothing but perving, but they had episodes at a time of being otherwise useful. They were important to the plot. Mineta's entire character is being a perv and while he has had his fighting moments, 99% of his screen time is being a perv. That is why he sucks in particular. Prev
