You're Going To Be Amazing - Limerancy - Tumblr

Let me be real for a second here - I hate Bakugou Katsuki. I absolutely hate him. He tormented Midoriya for years, even stooping low enough to tell Midoriya to “take a swan dive off the roof”. He’s a horrible person. But he’s such a great character! Why? Well, there’s a few reasons -

1. He wasn’t always like that

Bakugou used to be bffs with Midoriya before his quirk manifested. They fanboyed over All Might together and talked about how they wanted to be heroes when they grew up

Everything was great! And then his quirk manifested. His descent into asshole-ry started way before they even knew Midoriya was quirkless

It started when the adults in his life started putting him on a pedestal because of his quirk. He was constantly praised on how amazing his quirk was, how powerful he was. They started treating him better than his peers because - “do you see this kid’s quirk? He’s definitely gonna be a hero with something like that! We better start grooming him to be the best damn hero this world has ever known”. And so Bakugou Katsuki started believing he was better than everyone else

And that does things to an impressionable little kid. He became cruel, aggressive, arrogant, and just over-all rude.

Now - I’m not saying that Bakugou Katsuki isn’t responsible for his behavior. At one point, he should have realized, “hey, this isn’t okay” and stopped - but he didn’t. I’m just saying that the adults in his life should have known better. They shouldn’t have allowed him to become so volatile. But they did. It’s quite tragic, really. The adults in Bakugou’s life failed him, they failed doing the one thing they needed to do. They failed to raise him.

2. He’s not your typical hero

Bakugou Katsuki defies all stereotypes when it comes to heroes - at least he seems to (but let’s save that for later). He’s aggressive, threatening, selfish, destructive, and only cares about winning

By all accounts, he should be a villain! The way his personality is set up, the way his relationships with the other characters are, the sensible thing would be to think of him as a villain! In fact, other villains recognized this and - spoiler alert if you’re an anime-only fan - he gets kidnapped and the Villain League tries to initiate him into their ranks. They promise him power, but he refuses because dammit! This kid wants to be a hero! He wants to be like All Might! although he’ll never admit it

Bakugou Katsuki is the definition of Chaotic Good. He’s reckless, aggressive, volatile, destructive, and doesn’t give a damn what other people think - but he’s gonna be the best goddamn hero ever. He’s a well-rounded, dynamic character. He seems real. He’s not some highly fantasized, flawless character who can do no wrong. He hurts people, he says the wrong thing at the wrong time, he makes mistakes. He’s human.

3. He has so much potential!

Bakugou Katsuki isn’t perfect! In fact, he’s far, far, far from it. He has a long way to go before he becomes good hero material. But that’s the best part! We see so many kids who are somehow the perfect hero material right off the bat and barely get any development within their series. But here, we get to see that development! We get to see Bakugou Katsuki become a good hero - not a great hero, but a good hero. For those that read the manga, we’re already seeing some of this development. We’re seeing Bakugou start to work well with others,

caring about others

(albeit in some very… Bakugou ways). I, personally, think that the change started at the Sports Festival. He was pitted against someone who he thought was gonna be an easy win. He thought she was weak, but Uraraka Ochako proved him wrong

She showed him that not everything is how it seems, and that there are many types of strong (mental, physical, emotional, etc.)

Not to mention - the BAKUSQUAD! Arguably some of my favourite characters in the series, the Bakusquad is slowly helping Bakugou turn into a better person. Why? Well, because they like him, for one

No, they’re not ‘friends’ with him because they’re scared of him. They like who he is as a person and, more likely, they can see who he can become. That’s huge for Bakugou. He doesn’t have to be aggressive and powerful and loud for people to like him anymore. He doesn’t have to bully people to get them to pay attention to him (you can bet your ass that when the other kids started seeing the adults play favourites, they started hating Bakugou for it). That means a lot to Bakugou. Most importantly, his friends aren’t afraid to call him out for being a shitty person

And, for the first time in his life. Bakugou Katsuki is no longer the most powerful person in the room. That was a BIG moment for him. Seeing how in control and simply powerful Todoroki Shouto was threw him in a loop

If he didn’t change his ways, there was no way Bakugou would be able to beat Todoroki (and if Todoroki had used his fire in the duel, Bakugou would have lost so hard, lbr).

Let’s not forget - Midoriya Izuku. Now, I am a little iffy about Izuku still caring about Bakugou despite the torment he put him through, but I can see where he’s coming from. I mean, this dude was his bff from the get-go. And when Bakugou got his quirk, Midoriya had (and still has) nothing but admiration for him

I think Midoriya still remembers the way Bakugou was before and is hoping they can be friends like that again

Just like the Bakusquad, Midoriya can see who Bakugou has the potential to become. Midoriya is just that type of person, honestly. And that was showcased with Todoroki. He saw someone who was arrogant, aggressive, and angry. But he also saw someone who was hurt. He saw a kid crying out for help. And so Midoriya helped him.

I think something similar is going on with Bakugou and Midoriya, but at a more subtle level. For all their fighting, Bakugou and Midoriya know each other like the back of their hands. After all, Midoriya was the only one to realize something was wrong with him in Episode 8

Midoriya can see that the Bakugou he knew is still in there somewhere, fighting to come back out. The Bakugou we know and hate is the Bakugou that was created to be the best. He puts on this mask of believing himself to be the best so no one can see just how little confidence he really has

fake it til you make it, right?

And, for those of us who read the manga, we catch a glimpse of this when All MIght ‘dies’. Bakugou blames himself. He really, truly believes he is the reason the era of All Might is over

and that in of itself is heartbreaking

So let’s get this straight - I hate Bakugou Katsuki. He’s arrogant, volatile, violent, destructive, and an all out asshole. But I’ll be damned if my heart doesn’t break for him. He’s been through some shit not as much as others but still, and the fact that he blames himself for All Might’s death brings literal tears to my eyes. So yes, I hate Bakugou Katsuki - but I like who he’s becoming, and I love who he can become.

His peers and his teachers are showing him that his behavior isn’t acceptable, which I believe is the start to a long path of redemption for Bakugou
