I'm looking at a couple of gaming laptops to upgrade to. Most of my interest is taken up by the CyberPowerPc Fangbook 4 with a gtx 1060(7th gen i7 as well) However, on amazon and a couple other sites, I found an Asus ROG G752 with a 6th gen i7 and a gtx 980m (certified refurbished) for a very good price considering everything else it has.

My question is, will the 980m perform better then the 1060 mobile in real-world applications? and which would be better bang for buck?

The 1060 is almost the power of a full desktop 1060, so If you need the power of the 1060 and kaby lake i7, then go with a new one, but if you aren't doing crazy things like VR, go for the Refurbished 980m i76700HQ.

The 1060 will perform better unless you start getting into vbios modding (what I'm going to be doing on my refurb G751), not to mention that the Fangbook is built better.

Just throwing this out there, are you sure you want a 17" one?  My last laptop was 17" and I'm glad I went back to 15".  Everything is crisper.  Take a look at this.

The 1060 is equal to a full fledged GTX 980, which makes it about 30% faster, on average, compared to the 980M. It's faster and uses less power overall.

Uhhh. I'm pretty sure the average 1060 performs worse than the 980m.

The first slew of 1060 thin and lights like the Razer Blade failed vr spec where as an oced 980m can pass it.

Pure potential, the 1060 wins out, but you would still need an unlocked vbios mod to push the 1060 alot beyond the 980m.

Currently highest 1060n performance is in a mxm card with an unlocked prema vbios.

That fangbook is basically a gt62vr I think.

    So fangbook wins out here.

Yeah. I have a 15" one rn and the larger screen would be preferred and very helpful.

Also guys, after looking around a bit more, I found a 1060 version of the same thing at around the same price point(refurbished ofc), with less ram(16gb compared to the 32 on the above one) and no ssd.

Ram is no problem for me as 16gb is more than enough(the 32gb was just an extra treat).

    What do you guys think?

Yeah, even 8GB is enough for most gaming laptops.

On the refurbished one, make sure you check what the warranty is before purchasing.  I purchased a refurbished one not too long ago and one of the speakers was bad. Some places have a no return policy, and I'd avoid that. Even if it's just a 30 day warranty, that's much better than none at all.

I suspect that most 1060N laptops would preform better than 980M ones given proper cooling and the thin and light craze has more to do with the 980M laptops performing better than anything else (a good example is any Razer product - they thermal throttle so badly that a 1070N can pull higher 3DMark scores than the 1080N in the Pro).

I suspect that an extremely Overclocked 980M could beat the 1060N in my 13 R3, since I don't overclock it and run it at stock, but as things stand my card usually pulls down 3DMark scores that beat stock 980m handily and match most Overclocked scores. But my system has also been repasted with Liquid Metal, the cooling system slightly modded, and my card tends to run on the upper end of the 1060N spectrum.

    AMD 3950x

    EVGA FTW3 2080Ti

Ik that's my point. Most 1060s r in thin and lights. Also 1060n perform no where near 980n. 980m oced performs well especially if it's a good price. But the 1060 has the most potential.

If you have it LMed u can go for that oc plus undervolt on the CPU for a sick system.

If you get a Clevo unit with a 1060 and compare it to the same unit with a 980M, the 1060 unit will win. Be realistic here. Don't pick a Razer and compare it to a modded, tweaked Alienware, pl0x. :3
