bolt-action B I am working up a light 1 1/8 oz. target load (12 gauge) using Federal hulls and 700-X powder. The powder density is such that when loaded to the velocity I want (1160-1170 fps) that the case is not full and the crimps are dished severely when using a 12S3 wad. Claybuster Wads web site states the following for their 12S0 replacement wad: CB2100-12 (12S0) For use in 7/8 to 1-1/8 oz. trap, skeet, sporting clays or hunting loads. Performs best in straight wall cases such as Federal paper or plastic and Fiocchi. Optimum load is 1 oz. Has anyone had any experience using 12S0 wads/clones for 1 1/8 oz loads? I loaded a couple of shells with them and the crimp was perfect. I know that I could probably adjust my crimp station to improve crimps with the 12S3 wads, but I don't want to have to do this. I also load Remington and Winchester shells and they crimp perfectly just where it is at now. This is also true for Federal hulls and Green Dot powder for handicap loads. I don't want to have to adjust/re-adjust back every time to load a few of these shells. #1 · Jan 28, 2010 I am working up a light 1 1/8 oz. target load (12 gauge) using Federal hulls and 700-X powder. I loaded 1 oz in the GM hull with Red Dot and the Fed 12S0. This seemed to be the best fit. These wads don't crush much at all, so I am not sure how 1 1/8 oz could fit. Shell lengths vary among brands (even the same brand!) and that requires crimp adjustment. If you write down your settings for each load, it is easy to hit the setting you need when loading that particular one. HHD #3 · Jan 28, 2010 Truth of the matter is that use of the 12SO will probably leave a small amount of shot unprotected on the end, BUT, there will be little if any effect on the performance of the load. If it fits right and crimps right. there is NO problem using the 12SO in place of the 12S3. Any pressure change will be insignificant with this swap. DLM #4 · Jan 28, 2010 Also look at the new revised CB 6100A - it has the same height as the CB 0178 which is taller. If you (or anyone) are interested, drop me a mailing addy in PM, and I'll send you some samples. MM3 #5 · Jan 28, 2010 I haven't been reloading long, but for what it's worth...I am loading Federal hulls with 16.7 of Clays, 1 1/8 of 8 shot, using 12S3's and I think they're perfect. Crimps look fine, I get a great pattern and have been powdering birds. Until someone shows me something better, I'm not changing a thing. :D #6 · Jan 28, 2010 I'm pretty sure the 12SO is better off loaded light. I've been loading 7/8oz over 16.2gr clays in a STS hull, it patterns exceptionally well. I've been breaking targets better with the light loads than I was with 1 1/8! As far as loading 1 1/8oz... I'd probably just go with the 12S3, there is published load data everywhere and there won't be an unknown pressure rating. Safety first! Evan S. #7 · Jan 29, 2010 bolt-action, Save yourself a lot of time and aggrivation by dropping a Cheerio on top of the shot charge before going to the starter crimp station. This won't affect the pressure one bit, but will be enough of a filler to make the crimp come out nice and pretty. If you can keep from snacking on them while you reload, a box will last quite a while. bpshooter #8 · Sep 6, 2021 I use a lot of 12SO/CB2100-12 wads, they are exactly the same.....a true clone. I also use Federal Gold Medal hulls, Federal 209A, 18.0 grains 700-X powder and 12S3/CB2118-12 wads with 1 1/8 oz. of shot for 1200 FPS. 17.0 grains gets you 1150 FPS. The crimps are flat with both loads. So either you are throwing a very light powder charge or a light shot charge or both. I am not guessing, been using these loads since 1990 something. #9 · Sep 6, 2021 Is this really an 11-year old thread? #11 · Sep 7, 2021 Almost 12 years. 0 Reply #10 · Sep 7, 2021 I don't think so. Looks familiar, and I've not been here that long. Forum software changeover, perhaps? #12 · Feb 12, 2022 If your gonna reload for a few rounds and do it right ....get you some Mylar and cut some wraps to just below the crimp line and put inside your inferior shot cups. World of difference if your serious about reloading. Shot cups are for ease of reloading but components are available for the better hand loads but I’m into ease of loading myself. Not interested in how many pellets a load will put into a 30” circle at 40 yards. My interest is how many geese, ducks quail, grouse, rabbit and squirrel it’ll put in my freezer at what ever yards I luck out on! 😁Good Shooting! #13 · Feb 12, 2022 Old thread, lol, I responded to it 5 months ago!!
