Alternator not charging My car is not charging the battery and the power steering and traction control are not working what could be wrong with the car. The happened after the car was stuck in the mud. It's a vw polo tsi. Status: Open Jan 03, 2020 - 08:16 PM

Hi thereIt's most likely that the stability control and power steering don't work as a result of the alternator not charging the battery - these cars are extremely sensitive to voltage fluctuations in the main electrical system, and at the first sign of trouble, they tend to disable some systems.Regarding the alternator itself: One of two things could have happened while it was stuck in the mud. The first is that the alternator belt was dislodged by mud entering between the pulleys and the belt itself, leading to slippage of the belt (which will make the alternator not charge, because it's not receiving proper driving force from the belt). The second is that some mud actually entered the alternator and somehow got stuck inside the alternator itself (it's not a sealed unit, so foreign object intrusion is a real possibility), which could also cause it to stop charging (or not charge sufficiently). The first problem can easily be diagnosed and fixed by yourself - just clean up the pulleys and the belt, and refit it correctly afterwards. The second problem will unfortunately require an auto electrical specialist to remedy, because the alternator may need to be rebuilt. Either way, you should get it checked out ASAP.Hope this helps!

Thank you. I actually took the car to an electrician and it turned out that the main fuse were actually burnt. How did that happened I don't know.
