The compound is a ring with ethyl and methyl attached to it.
When compound A is oxidized, then the alkaline KMnO₄ will work on the compound which will add oxygen to both the carbons attached to the ring. These carbons will then release the hydrogen to take oxygen. This will result in the carboxylic acid functional group.
This will form compound B.
Compound B will again be a ring with two carboxylic acids (COOH) attached to the first and third carbon of the ring.
This compound is isophthalic acid and it will further undergo a reaction with bromine in the presence of iron. This will give one monobromo-substitute product.
The product will be a C₆H₆ ring and it will have a COOH group on the first and third carbon but after the reaction, the compound will eliminate one hydrogen from the fifth carbon and substitute Bromine which will form C₆H₅Br ring and two COOH groups present which are meta-directing.
