[report] [news]Thursday 4th July 2013quotequote all I'm hopefully going to have a look at the car linked below tomorrow. I've owned a B5 tdi Audi but never a petrol one. Can anyone give me some buying advice for them please? Is the 2.0 petrol NA or is it turbocharged?http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...TIA

[report] [news]Thursday 4th July 2013quotequote all Quiet enough but needs to be worked hard to get it going and better off with the noisier diesel as it is more drivable. Mine went to 153k no problem apart from coil packs. Needs to be cheap relative to a TDI. Managed 34mpg avg over 55k miles.

[report] [news]Thursday 4th July 2013quotequote all The 2.0 na engine is not a good choice, either the 1.8t or 1.9tdi are far FAR better.

I need to get a car today or tomorrow ideally.

[report] [news]Friday 5th July 2013quotequote all My wife had a 2001 2.0 130 Passat saloon, and while it didn’t exactly set the heather alight with its performance it was far from woeful. Performance is brisk enough, but like any N/A petrol engine you need to rev it a bit to get it going, you’ll probably average 30-35mpg with high thirties, maybe 40mpg on a run, and it should prove reliable. My wife sold her Passat to my brother a few years ago, with 82K miles on the clock, and he recently sold it with the mileage sitting around 130K. Nothing ever went wrong with it. If reliability and lowish running costs is paramount then that A4 should fit the bill, however, as others have said the 1.8t will give you better performance, with very little trade off in MPG, but it might need a little more spent on maintenance.

[report] [news]Friday 5th July 2013quotequote all I've just bought a 52 plate 2.0 SE and whilst it's not my favourite car, it's pretty good.I only bought it as a stop gap while I fix up my Range Rover which needs some TLC. Unfortunately it's an auto and has the usual Multitronic problems, but other than that it's so nice to drive that I'm tempted to keep it. Just wish I had bought a manual!Problems so far have been:heater doesn't push out heat - needs new matrix? Seems to be common.Central locking has packed up - think this is down to broken wires in the drivers door loom between the door and the body - tried to repair once. Again, common problem.Rocker cover gasket leaking - again, apparently common.Radio aerial amplifier intermittently defective - again a common problemCar is amazingly economical (compared to what I'm used to), giving me very high 30s and occasionally low 40s although most of my driving is fast A roads and dual carriageways. Much better than my OH's 1.8T A3.Performance is adequate although it's a little hard to tell with the gearbox problems I currently have. The ride is very comfortable, the seats are good and the brakes are excellent. And it's dirt cheap to insure (although some insurance companies don't seem to like Audis). So, despite the issues I have with mine, I'm pretty pleased with it especially as it was so cheap.

Cambelt and water pump at ~4 years/60k (maybe 5/75k)Alloys can corrodeKnocking suspensionAny misfire could be coil packs or MAF, coil packs are part of a free check and replace if not the latest version. My F-i-L ran a 1.8 and 2.0 Passat back to back for 10 years from new, and the only issues he had were the alloys and failing suspension.

[report] [news]Friday 5th July 2013quotequote all Mr Pies said: Any buying advice for one of those? smileIf you buy it, take the sump off and clean oil pick up or replace. They can sludge up and starve engine of oil, wrecking it very quickly. I would do it regardless of service history for peace of mind.
