AWS provides various Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances, including a broad choice of Graviton2 processor-based, which allow customers to optimize their workloads on performance and costs. The latest addition to the Graviton2-based instances is the low cost burstable general-purpose T4g instances.
In the past, AWS released EC2 T3 instances for customers to run general-purpose workloads in a very cost-effective manner. Yet, customers asked for instances that could run at increased peak performance at a low cost. Hence, AWS announced the release of T4g instances, a new generation of low-cost burstable instance type powered by AWS Graviton2 - a processor custom-built by AWS using 64-bit Arm Neoverse cores.
Danilo Poccia, chief evangelist (EMEA) at AWS, stated in his blog post on T4g instances:
Using T4g instances, you can enjoy a performance benefit of up to 40% at a 20% lower cost in comparison to T3 instances, providing the best price/performance for a broader spectrum of workloads.
The public cloud vendor designed the T4g instances for applications that do not always require 100% CPU power. Furthermore, customers will have the same credit as the T3 instances with unlimited mode enabled by default. The T4g instances are suitable for workloads such as search engine indexing, and are available in seven sizes providing up to 5 Gbps of network and up to 2.7 Gbps of Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) performance.

With T4g low cost burstable general-purpose instances, AWS now offers several Graviton2-based instances to better optimize workloads for cost and performance:
• General-purpose (M6g) instances • Compute-optimized (C6g) instances • Memory-optimized (R6g) instances
Furthermore, the M6gd, C6gd, and R6gd instance types have NVM Express (NVMe) locally attached SSD drives, up to 2 x 1.9 TB.
Holger Mueller, principal analyst and vice president at Constellation Research Inc., told InfoQ:
AWS has some catching up to do when it comes to more specialized silicon, and that is being addressed with Graviton. So, it is good to see AWS catching up with a new Graviton offering. The more compute platforms, the better enterprises can choose the right compute for the right load.
Mueller also added:
Enterprise workloads are not stable regarding CPU demands; there are steady and more peaky loads that ramp up and down dynamically, e.g. web servers. The new t4g instances support these workload types that can burst on a faster chip (Graviton 2), and with faster compute offer cheaper workload performance.
Currently, T4g instances are available in US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Tokyo, Mumbai), and Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland), and its pricing details are available on the EC2 instances pricing page. Note that until the end of the year, AWS customers can try t4g.micro instances for free up to 750 hours per month, or new customers through the AWS free trial. And lastly, the T4g instance types are also available for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).
