Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Oct 4, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (UNO DUB) did I mention this is my daily driver? Want to make sure I dont get stranded tomorrow. Your help is appreciated Image #3 · Oct 4, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (UNO DUB) Either the battery is dead or the alternator need replacement. AutoZone or the like can help diagnose. #4 · Oct 5, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (tryin2vw) if you have a volt meter you can check the voltage of the battery when the car is running. It should be between 13.9-14.5v If its more the alternator is overcharging (say 16.5v) if its less the alternator is undercharging (say 12.4v) if its say 8.9v or something the alternator fuse is probably blown. #5 · Oct 6, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (Slimjimmn) So I looked through my B5 Passat V6 factory manual and couldn't find where there's an alternator fuse so I did what my buddy suggested I do. He said it could be the alternator or the battery. He said if I unplugged my positive cable while the car was running, the car should continue to run if the Alternator is good which would mean the battery is bad but if the car died then its the alternator. Tried it and the car died immediately. Battery died shortly after when I plugged the positive cable back on and turned the ignition in off position then turned to crank it. So is it the Alternator and if so what am I looking to pay. Currently short on cash ($00.00) and dunno if I can afford to fix her now. Whats in store for me? TIA Forgot to mention, I have the battery on a trickle charger over night to see if that recharges the battery #6 · Oct 6, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (UNO DUB) Battery was left charging on a trickle charger overnight but didnt charge. #7 · Oct 6, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (UNO DUB) The facts line up for the case that first the alternator died, and then eventually the battery died too. Unfortunately that's 2 things you'll need to buy. I haven't had to fix an alternator problem since the days when they had a regulator in the same circuit therby giving you a third possibility. Probably autozone can tell you that, and offer any other alternatives. #8 · Oct 7, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (rayj) Came home too late to take the car to Autozone to have them check the Alternator/Battery. But When I came home I found the battery was fully charged from the trickle charger. So I put it back into the car and turned it on. Found that the battery light still is on. Believe this means alternator for sure right? Wonder if theyll have to remove the front bumper to get to the alternator. Thanks a bunch for the advice so far, just wanna make sure this isnt something I could install on my own. This is comming from one broke passat b5 owner trying to save money and make sure the job is done correctly. Your help is always appreciated http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif #9 · Oct 7, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (UNO DUB) Drive it to Autozone and have them check the battery and alternator. Easy to test on the car and only takes 5 minutes max. Plus it's free Image That will tell you your answer. I'm betting alternator, and yes it's a b!tch to get to and won't be cheap. #10 · Oct 7, 2009 Re: B5 V6 Passat- Battery Light won't turn off (James 93SLC)

I told you!!! And autozone are notorious liers.. or other parts place for that matter. They will tell you is the battery, make you buy one and then tell you is the alternator when the battery wont charge. Last time they told me my new batt was bad, (I discharged it the night before cranking a car for test) and then I made them charge it for testing and I took it, put it on my car and drove into the sunset http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif And never had a problem again. Image I am gonna look at the engine again.. I am gonna have to charge you for this one... specially If I have to take the front end appart. Image #11 · Oct 9, 2009 You won't get a light for a weak or dead battery...the car will just strand you without any warning. Insert Quotes Post Reply
