PTsalas Hey guys, What is the main difference between the M4 brake calipers on our F3 and the M4.32 on the Ducati 959 (also on their V2)? Its tough making sense of the Brembo catalog and not sure if the 4.32 is a higher spec caliper than our M4? Both are obviously lower spec than the M50. If I have my facts right, was the M4 not the first "monobloc" caliper and it debuted on the Ducati 1098 back in 2007? Piston diameters appear the same on both (32mm) so not sure where the 4.32 fits in. On the 3rd post, a good write-up is made on the ratio between your piston diameter on the caliper and your Master Cylinder in order to get the right "feel". Something I never really considered. https://www.ducati.ms/threads/m4-vs-m50.440369/ #3 · Dec 26, 2019 I thought the M4's were the M4.32's or M432. Same caliper. The master cylinder ratio is important for all brake systems. Although then there is personal preference too. If i recall brembo recommend a 17mm MC for the M50 (30 mm pistons) and the 19 for the M4 (32 mm pistons) #4 · Dec 26, 2019 Original M4 has 34 mm pistons, M4.32 has 32mm pistons. #5 · Dec 28, 2019 The M4.32 on the Ducati 959 are pretty shitty in my opinion. While I pretty much like everything on that bike, the brakes are be far a weak point. It may be a combination of caliper and master cylinder. Not sure what size the MC is on the 959. I can't believe that they did not upgrade the brakes for the V2! If I owned a 959 or V2 the very first thing I would do is put on M50. I did put on M50 calipers on my F3 675 I had. My 675 was an early bike and did not come with the M4s originally. I ran it with the stock master cylinder & rotors as well as Brembo Supersport rotors on my 2nd set of wheels, and I loved it. Very immediate and sensitive feel and no mushiness at all. It may be a bit much for less experienced riders who may have a bit less control of the brake lever. I really enjoyed the 100% feel and 1 or 2 finger braking power. I also never had any complaints when riding F3 800s with the M4s but the M50s were defenitely another level better. #6 · Dec 29, 2019 Ah the beloved Brembo OEM caliper discussion.. I can say i have done my fair share of fiddling with these calipers, and think this might be of some help... and for sure that excel with the hydraulic ratio is a nice tool. Yes, as you mentioned the M4 monoblock is the 1st gen OEM monoblock that came out on the 1098 Ducati, 675R triumph and several other models.. and as stock came with a suitable Oem brembo master 19x18 if i recall. The master was slightly different between the bikes as well, which continues on currently with the ducati & ZX-10R for sure. The calipers you mention are the same ones that came on suzukis, and the 899 if not mistaken? Yes, the main difference is in the caliper size. Older models use larger pistons and larger calipers.. this will go away, as in the end the newer smaller lighter calipers will replace them all. The caliper you mentioned are typically a good replacement for bikes with older 2 piece calipers, but not on the same performance level as the M4, let alone m50 or stylema. My 2015 F3 800 ABS came with M4 brembo and a nissin master, not exactly sure of the ratio.. either way the brakes sucked in comparison to my Panigale, M50 Caliper and RCS 17x18/20 NON ABS equipped bike. They also really sucked vs my triumph 675R with m50 calipers, RCS 17x18/20 galfer rotors, SBS RS pads....... not nearly the same feel, and the lever maintained the same firmness as the other 3 bikes. Since i had a spare set of M50's here i swapped them in and used the OEM Nissin master initially, as i was pretty sure the ABS was causing the less than firm lever. well the lever firmed up a bit, but it always ended up feeling about the same...I then swapped on a spare RCS 17x18/20 on and it got a bit better (feel was better for sure) but not much of any difference per say in total stopping power, but generally the bike always seems to be impacted by the ABS. I then swapped on the latest greatest OEM Brembo Stylema calipers, Galfer rotors SBS RS pads and the then we have some more solid results (more inline with my 675R). The bike is still not nearly as immediate and aggressor per say as my bikes without ABS, but it works for sure.. Just have not gotten to the point of pulling off the abs, since i have yet to get her on track and see how the abs impacts the bike.. The stylema is hands down best caliper out there until you start getting into the billet calipers.. and it is most likely better than many of the older billet ones. Insert Quotes Post Reply
