This week, Laura talks with Brother Chân Pháp Hữu. Brother Hữu is a Zen Buddhist monk, Abbott of Plum Village in France, international educator, and long time attendant to the venerable Thích Nhất Hạnh. They discuss how as a boy in Canada, he first met Thích Nhất Hạnh and was so moved by his teachings that he moved to Plum Village at age 13 to become a monk. The two community builders and friends discuss the passing of their beloved teacher, how the teachings of Buddhism guide them, and how they each navigate loss and love amidst these overwhelming times.

About Brother Hữu

Brother Chân Pháp Hữuis a senior Teacher in Thích Nhất Hạnh’s international community and the Abbot of the monks’ community in Plum Village, the practice center founded by Thay in southwest France. Born in Vietnam, he emigrated to Canada as a child. He began training with Thay at the age of thirteen, when he first entered the monastery to become a monk. Thay gave him the name Chân Pháp Hữu meaning “True Dharma Friend.” For years, he accompanied him on his international teaching tours as his attendant. Today, Brother Pháp Hữu is deeply committed to building community and continuing Thích Nhất Hạnh’s’s legacy, bringing his teachings to businesspeople, families, and young adults. Brother Hữu is passionate about basketball, music, and developing new approaches to teamwork, leadership, mentoring and coaching, and is a beloved co-host of the Plum Village podcast, The Way Out Is In.
