Buổi Nói Chuyện Về Narcos - Netflix - An The Bird

The film is based on historical events in Colombia, centering around the notorious figure of Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria. Escobar was responsible for distributing 80% of opium into America during the 1980s and 1990s. At the height of his power, he was ranked as the 7th richest person in the world by various economic magazines, including Forbes, for many consecutive years.

Escobar’s reign of terror resulted in the deaths of an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people, including innocent civilians, close associates, relatives, and individuals both directly and indirectly involved in his criminal activities. Among his victims were a presidential candidate and a minister. He orchestrated various violent acts, including bombing a commercial airliner in a failed plot to assassinate the president, and declared war on the country on two separate occasions.

Despite his heinous crimes, Escobar was viewed as both an enemy and a hero by different segments of society. The complex nature of his character and his impact on Colombian history continue to fascinate and intrigue many.

I had the unique opportunity to attend a talk by two DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agents, Javier Pena and Steve Murphy, who played pivotal roles in bringing Escobar’s story to the world. These agents are also the main characters in the series based on Escobar’s life. The experience of attending their talk was akin to being immersed in a movie, filled with drama and a sense of fear. The intensity of the emotions lingered even after I returned home and went to sleep, leaving me feeling overwhelmed and deeply affected by the stories I had heard.

Và mình có cơ hội được dự buổi nói chuyện của 2 đặc vụ DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) Javier Pena and Steve Murphy, là người đã đem câu chuyện kể với thế giới, cũng là 2 nhân vật chính trong series phim. Cảm giác đi xem buổi nói chuyện rất thú vị. Cảm giác như đang ở trong phim. Kịch tính pha lẫn sợ. Về nhà ngủ một giấc dậy vẫn thấy choáng và ngợp.

At the end of the talk, Agent Murphy shared that many people criticized the photo he took with Pablo’s body. They questioned how he could laugh next to that corpse when it’s their duty to protect human life and property. In response, Agent Murphy stated that he has always believed and will continue to believe that with Pablo’s death, thousands of other innocent Colombians will be safer.

Even though more than 20 years have passed, Pablo’s story remains eternally relevant for those who are still impacted by it.

P.S. Colombian friends often express frustration when discussing this movie. It’s as if each country has its own distinct “brand,” like the Vietnam War or products made in China. The question “Is it safe in Colombia?” often evokes comparisons to the portrayal of Colombia in shows like Narcos. It’s a topic that brings both humor and sensitivity to the conversation!

Cuối buổi nói chuyện Đặc vụ Murphy có chia sẻ rằng rất nhiều người chỉ trích bức hình ông chụp bên xác của Paoblo. Tại sao nhiệm vụ của ông là bảo vệ tính mạng và tài sản con người nhưng ông có thể cười bên cái xác ấy? Ông chia sẻ rằng đã đang và sẽ luôn trả lời rằng khi Paoblo chết đi thì ông biết hàng ngàn người Colombia vô tội khác sẽ được an toàn hơn.

Dù đã hơn 20 năm trôi qua nhưng câu chuyện của Paoblo không bao giờ cũ cho những con người còn ở lại.

p/s: những người bạn Colombia rất khó chịu khi nhắc đến phim này. Giống như mỗi nước có một “thương hiệu” riêng như Việt Nam War, Made in China, Is it safe in Colombia like in Narcos?! Haha!
