So I started looking at late model c5 Z06 and c6 05-08 vettes. I'm 33 so the modern consciences of the vette appeal to me anyways. This is a toy and not a daily driver. Something to mod and play with. It seems the c5 z06 amd c6 05-08 vettes are in price range. The c5 z06 has the cool factor but not sure how I feel about the solid roof. I really like the c6 with targa top. Which one would you consider. The ls2 seems to be a pretty short lived motor, what's the deal? I don't know where you get the idea that the LS2 is short lived but, you will get plenty of owners here who will disagree. The biggest comparison, broad paint brush statement, is the C5 Z06 is a more "rough around the edges" driver's car while the C6 is much more refined, nicer car to be in over time. I did a Google search after I posted and this really is a common question. Only reason I say the ls2 was short lived as the vettes only had it for 2 years. If the z06 had a targa top it would be a no brainier. It has better handling, better braking, and more HP. Hence the ls-2 makes 411HP stock, and not the de-rated 400 that GM claimed so dealers would not have a hard time selling the C5 z06 stock on the lots when the the C6 was introduced. As for C6 base or Z51 option cars, you want the z51 option car on anything shorter than a Z06/ZR1 model. Hence the z51 option, later became the GS models instead (the GS models become wide body cars). As for auto or stick, not a Fan of the A4 on the 2005 model, but if you want an auto, your not giving up much with the later A6 trans (with a tune on the trans to wake it up). F55 suspension, it works OK for that is designed for (old guys that wanted a soft ride in cruse mode), but it not a z51 option package suspension instead. So if money is tight (read you buy a vet, you better have extra money for mods and repairs you did not budget to start with), then nothing wrong with a C5 Z06 to play with. But with any vet, the newer the gen, the better off you are (questionable on the C7's with the problems they are having, and may want to hold off until the C8 is released isntead). Bottom line, the C1, C2 and C3 big blocks up to about 1972 where good cars. The C3 from 1973 and C4 (short of the zr-1) was disastrous no way you look at it (way under powered), then the C5 z06 is where GM was starting to catch up with what the vet should have been since 72 with the big block vets. The C6 z51 option package is where GM started to get the vet very close to where it should have been since 72/catching up with the times (the Z06 and zr1 made it that much better instead). Where the c7 shines is it improved handling over the C6, but the new LT motors with direct inject still has most of us wondering it that was the smart move (the adjustable valve timing was a step in the right direction although). No, the C6 Vettes had the LS2 for 3 years and for a total of 97,523 Coupes and Verts (model years 2005, 2006, and 2007). Do what I just did, buy an 08 with Z51. You will not be disappointed. For me, I wanted more options on interior color as well. I got an 08 Victory red, z51 auto LT3 with 36,000 miles for 27K. The advice I got was C6 Z51 over any C5. It was also pointed out to me that the 2010 and up Grand Sport (Z16) has the Z51 package plus Z06 brakes and the larger wheel/tire size. If you get a manual trans coupe, it also has a dry sump oil system and the battery relocated in the trunk. The Z51 and GS are also available with a removable top coupe or convertible. Z06 is fixed roof only. Whatever you choose, look into getting a car with the HUD. It's a very cool feature. . Last edited by dmk0210; 06-19-2016 at 11:16 PM. Both winners... 65k on z06 and now 99k on c6. Want roof off capability buy c6... Want a slightly more raw race car like experience get the z06. Both bought brand new. Both favorite sports cars. I think I loved the z06 and really like the c6 z51. I really dig roof off driving all summer. Life is good. Hope this helps... Last edited by JerriVette; 06-20-2016 at 12:15 AM. Reply Like

I rank them: 1. 2006 Z06 2. 2000 Convertible 3. 2005 Coupe The 2005 was fast, but didn't feel fast. Just wasn't "raw" feeling. It's a sports car, not an accord. You can do better in the aftermarket. I had an 08 base Coupe before. I don't know of any sensors in the Suspension. The Johnny O'Connell stage 1 kit is 4 shocks & 2 sway bars & all the parts to install it. I was very impressed w/how it drove on the street & the twisty turns after those upgrades. There were lots of upgrades in 2008. (http://www.corvettemuseum.org/learn/...orvette-specs/). So, I ended up getting Drilled & Slotted rotors w/Premium Semi-Metallic pads from 'Brake Performance' & the Johnny O'Connell Stage 1 suspension kit...Among other some other mods... (Those first two mods, equal or go above factory Z51 parts in those categories) I had some money left for CAI, tune w/Headers & Exhaust upgrades. Last edited by dmoneychris; 06-20-2016 at 12:37 AM. Thanks and that's exactly what I was assuming you could. I get the gearing is different on the z51 as well. I guess the only sensors one wild deal with is if you had the magnetic ride control and switched those shocks out for aftermarket or at the very minimum you would have a button that does nothing.
