Irish I Can someone help me decipher the engine number on my 1970 Cougar? It is: C90E6015-B and a 5 to the right about 1/2 inch (on the back side of the engine) the 6 could possibly be a G. I can't find the trim tag on my Cougar. where is it suppose to be? Thanks. #1 · Oct 21, 2007 Can someone help me decipher the engine number on my 1970 Cougar? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Oct 21, 2007 The VIN is 0F91H5440 #12 · Jul 19, 2010 (Edited) You are missing a couple of digits there, pilgrim. From my experience, if you put your ear to one of the freeze out plug holes, like a seashell, and you hear La Cucaracha, you have a Mexican 302 block. All of the engines I have ever tried this with that I heard that were Mexican 302 blocks. 0 Reply #3 · Oct 23, 2007 (Edited) there are 3 points of identification on your '70. i have a '70, too. 1) vin number on the dash 2) data plate on the door; white one is yours. Image 3) buck tag The body buck tag is a small rectangular aluminum tag--approximately two inches by three inches--mounted by a single screw to the radiator core support above the passenger-side headlight assembly on many classic Cougars. Its purpose was to define the modifications that needed to be performed to the body (or "buck") it was attached to. Buck tags supplemented the buildsheet regarding these modifications. Image this tag tells alot about your car... For 1967- 1970 Cougars, the buck tag is always laid out with the first line containing the VIN, the body code, the paint code, and the rotation number. The first code on the next line is the trim code and should not be confused with an option code. After that, all codes are option codes. <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=520 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD> Image </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width=630 bgColor=#ccccff border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle>1970</TD><TD>AC </TD><TD>Air Conditioning </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>AM</TD><TD>Stereo Speakers--AM/FM/Antenna (?)</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>BROWN</TD><TD>Vinyl Roof Color</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>BTRAC</TD><TD>Both Racing Mirrors</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD>CL </TD><TD>Courtesy Lights</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>CS</TD><TD>(unknown--could be competition suspension)</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>EC</TD><TD>EV/EM System (California only)</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>FA</TD><TD>(unknown--could be factory ram air)</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>GINGER</TD><TD>Vinyl Roof/Interior Color</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>HT</TD><TD>Vinyl Roof/Interior Color (Houndstooth)</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>IDG</TD><TD>Interior Decore Group</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>LHRA</TD><TD>Left Hand Racing Mirror</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>LHRAC</TD><TD>Left Hand Racing Mirror</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>PB </TD><TD>Power Brakes</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>PT</TD><TD>Power Top</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>PW</TD><TD>Power Windows</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>RM</TD><TD>Remote Mirror</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>SBR</TD><TD>Automatic Seat Back Release</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>ST</TD><TD>AM 8T Stereo</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>SUN</TD><TD>Sunroof</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>TW</TD><TD>Tilt Wheel</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>WHITE</TD><TD>Vinyl Roof Color</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff>.</TD><TD align=middle>X</TD><TD>Export Car</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> vin decodes as... I know this is an old thread & didn't know if you ever found out from someone to decipher this for you but here is the breakdown of the engine casting #: C-Decade for 1960's, 9-Is the year, so C9 is 1969, O-Is the carline for Fairlane/Torino (Don't worry, it is still correct for Cougar as my block has C8OE on it and has the VIN from my car stamped on it), 6015-Is the basic part # for a block & B-Is the change level (1st engineering change). There should be a date code near this casting number, either 3 or 4 characters, for example: 7A2 or 8F22. That would tell you when the block was cast. #5 · Jul 18, 2010 Engine Block Casting # C9OE-6015-B is a 351W 2V Motor Block. #7 · Jul 19, 2010 That is a standard 69/70 351 Windsor block. 2v or 4v is irrelevant. 0 Reply #6 · Jul 19, 2010 #8 · Jul 19, 2010 From My Experience, 4V Motors tend to have a -C Casting, as in C9OE-6015-C. That is the only difference I have ever found on 2V and 4V 351W Blocks. I have never found anything visibly different in the castings. . Every 4V Motor of mine has had a -C and every 2V has had a -B. I do not have an MPC, so anyone is free to add anything to this, it might not be definitive that all 4V were -C and 2V as -B. . I have two -B blocks in front of me right now, Both 2V motors. #9 · Jul 19, 2010 C9OE 6015-C is a 302 If it does not have 3 inch mains its not a 351 windsor. The 302 blocks have a small tiangle recess above the freeze plugs. You may want to take a second look. Also, 351 windsors have 1/2 inch head bolts opposed to 7/16 for 302s As I stated B blocks can be 2V or 4V I can only assume at this point that your 100's of previous posts are full of incorrect information as well. This not good for those that come to learn like me. It is hard enough to retain the correct information without reading uneducated and unresearched posts like yours. #19 · Jul 20, 2010

Here is what you are missing, grasshopper. The first thing you need to learn is how to weed out the bad advice from the good. Your friend here is providing a very valuable test environment for you, an environment when used properly will cultivate the ability to discern. So there you go. Regards, Bob 0 Reply #10 · Jul 19, 2010 (Edited) Oh, SNAP!!! #11 · Jul 19, 2010 Go ahead and GOOGLE the Casting Number of C9OE-6015-C and see what you come up with, Make sure you read all threads. . All of my 68-70 302 Blocks were C8- Not C9- The only time I have ever pulled a -C block was from 'M' Code 1969 351W 4V Cars. #13 · Jul 19, 2010

Then you pulled a 302 out of your M code car. Since I do not know everything and learn new stuff every day went ahead and did the google search. It is YOU that needs to open them up and read the threads. I can't beleive you put that much time into it and STILL came away with what you wrote. Wait...yes I can. Most of the posts start as thinking they have a 351 and after listening and then checking come to find out they in fact have a 302. Go figure Show more replies 0 Reply #15 · Jul 19, 2010 So Magcats, I was wondering. How has business been since joining the forum? Big MCnet related sales surge I'm guessing? #16 · Jul 19, 2010 With Correct 351W Deck Height, Heads and Intake? I highly doubt that. Who says it had the correct deck height, heads and intake? let me guess..you lol OK I just checked my small block stash and I have one C9OE 6015-C block. Do you think Ford made a mistake in the casting or I cannot correctly identify a 351 from a 302. Your choice. I can provide a few pics with todays newspaper if you wish. You would not know what you were looking at but everyone else here would.<!-- / message --><!-- sig --> #17 · Jul 19, 2010 He recently joined the 428 Reg peddling his generic heat shields, air cleaners etc and got his butt handed to him. You are trolling for newbies who count on vendors to supply correct honest descriptions of there wares. You are not one. #18 · Jul 19, 2010 You are seriously mistaken here. I was asked by Scott Hollenbeck himself to post the question on the 428CJ registry regarding my Heat Riser. My books showed it as a 1970 428CJ riser and I had to get confirmation from the Best. I NEVER listed anything for sale on the Registry, someone else brought my Ebay listing into play. Most likely just to publicly slam me. For all who are reading, I listed the Riser in my Ebay Store at $1,200 on par with a 428CJ Riser, HOWEVER, once I was so Tactfully explained to that it was Not a 428CJ Part, the Price decreased Dramatically. And I revised my listing immediately so as Not to sell an Incorrect Part. If I am a Bad Vendor, then my Sales would reflect that, and they don't. : ). 0 Reply #20 · Jul 20, 2010 Just the facts Ma'am Insert Quotes Post Reply
