Harrisburg, PA (July 26, 2021) — CBS 21 announced upcoming additions and changes to their news talent lineup. Candace Scalese will be joining CBS 21 as the anchor for CBS 21 News this Morning and CBS 21 News at Noon. Joel D. Smith will be joining Jasmine Brooks as co-anchor of CBS 21’s Evening and late news broadcasts. Both changes will begin on Monday, August 2nd. In addition, Reporter and Face the State anchor, Ryan Eldredge, will join the CBS 21 Morning Team in the Alert Center. Face the State airs every Sunday morning at 8:30 on CBS 21.
Joel D. Smith returns to the anchor desk having previously co-anchored CBS 21 News this Morning. Yet even while handling Sports Director Duties the past few years, he often came back to News for the biggest stories including the pandemic and CBS 21's Election Coverage using real-time results on our interactive map. For his efforts, he was named the region's "Best News Anchor/Reporter" by the Keystone Media Awards (formerly AP) both in 2020, and 2021.
Smith said, "Viewers often ask me which I prefer, News or Sports to cover? I reply that I want to be where the most compelling stories are. Sometimes that's Sports, but much more often it's News. I'm looking forward to focusing on more News stories now, while staying ready for the next big Sports story as well."
“We are very excited about the changes we are making to enhance our newscasts. Candace will bring more energy, enthusiasm and leadership to our talented morning team,” said CBS 21 News Director Bryan Queen. “Joel D. Smith’s extensive experience and storytelling skills will bring a new and interesting dynamic to our early and late newscasts.”
Previously, Candace spent four years at WACH FOX News in Columbia, SC as the primary morning anchor as well as a special projects anchor, field anchor, Jefferson Awards reporter, and investigative reporter. She has extensive breaking news and investigative experience covering stories both memorable and heart-breaking. She helped lead her community through the disappearance and death of 6-year-old Faye Swetlik, and an F-16 fighter jet crash that killed the pilot. She guided viewers during the Million Man March and investigated racially profiled traffic stops. Candace most recently dug through online records investigating a daycare facing more than 40 violations.
“I'm thrilled for this next step in my career, and I couldn’t be happier to serve the people of Central PA,” said Ms. Scalese. “I’m committed to being someone people can rely on, trust, and connect with every morning while they get their day started. I’m excited about becoming part of the community and making PA my home.”
Harrisburg is a homecoming for Candace’s husband Michael who grew up in Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill. The two are looking forward to spending more time with family and getting to know the people of Central Pennsylvania.
