4th September 2015 #1 invert48 🎙️ Gear Nut Joined: Jan 2012 Posts: 95 🎧 10 years Celestion Creambacks or Vintage 30's? I'm going for hard rock tones. Which of these speakers would be best for me and my setup? I have:

a marshall dsl40c amp
ESP ltd ax50 and seymour duncan hot rod pickups
a rat pedal
a soul food OD pedal
and boss distortion pedal

Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 56 My Recordings/Credits My Studio 🎧 10 years Vintage 30s are the heart a soul of most hard rock tones, the go to if you will.. Creambacks work nicely too, I think Periphery has one of each in their 2X12 cabs. Share Reply Quote

4th September 2015 #3 drbob1 Lives for gear Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 2,875 5 Reviews written 🎧 15 years Are we talking recording or live performance? A 112, 212 or 412 cab? If its for recording, it's worth having different speakers to mic up for different sounds, so a cab with an X pattern and a couple of both wouldn't hurt. OTOH, the price point you'd like to hit is a 412 cab used-Marshalls in worn cosmetic condition (which look cool and will still last forever) sell in the $300-400 range. Having played with a LOT of different speakers what I'd love to have would be a 412 with: 1. Vintage 30-very modern tone, enough bass, high mids bark 2. G12K-85 or G12-100 (basically the same speaker renamed)-smoother top end, much more authoritative bass 3. G12-65 or Cream-back or G12H-30: a more vintage tone, smoother cleans 4. Maybe a G12H-70, which is a great speaker for 80s metal I don't know how the cab would sound overall (probably dominated by the V30 and the G12-100) but it would give you a lot of flexibility when you mic'd it up. $200 for a cab with blown speakers, $350 for speakers used. Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 1,263 My Recordings/Credits 4 Reviews written 🎧 10 years I've had both. Vintage 30 is great for hard rock/heavy stuff. They have a very forward in your face sound. The cream backs are very similar but get smoother when you push them. I prefer the creams for their versatility. Share Reply Quote

4th September 2015 #7 invert48 🎙️ Gear Nut Joined: Jan 2012 Posts: 95 🎧 10 years I was going to get the creambacks but they are outta stock at sweetwater and i want to use them for the 24 month financing. Someone at sweetwater told me to get the v30s which are a bit cheaper.. So i'll prob go with the V30s. Although, it seems like the creams have better reviews on average. But i also feel like the v30s are probably more what im looking for in terms of tone from what i've read. but who knows. Either way, I think it will be a nice upgrade to the 70/80's. I hope it will make a big difference in my recordings. thanks! Share Reply Quote
