Glycol Ethers in Europe are classified according to Regulation EC No. 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP). As laid out in the regulation, glycol ethers have been assessed against pre-defined criteria using all of the available data, including the results of research work carried out by the producers of these substances. An overview of the Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, & Reprotoxic (CMR) classifications are given below:

  • No glycol ether is classified as carcinogenic
  • No glycol ether is classified as mutagenic
  • Several glycol ethers have been classified for reproductive toxicity 1B under the CLP Regulation and carry the Hazard Phrase H360 “may damage fertility or the unborn child”. Not all of them are commercially available. For those that are, the OSPA charter applies.
