gzig5 G Has anyone changed the CV joint on the front of the rear diff that is attached to the drive shaft? I think/hope I have traced my problem to this. I have the parts on order and should get them today. I'd like to hear from anyone that has done this what to look out for. The technical documentation I have is not very detailed. Do I need to pack it? I read something when I searched about sealing a joint with silicone? Any info would be appreciated. Yes when you reinstall it make sure it is full of high temp wheel bearing grease or CV grease. The CV joint should come with a small gasket which blows. Throw it in the garbage. Get a high quality RTV and put joint. Follow the directions and you will be good to go. Ryan #3 · Mar 4, 2009 Thanks Ryan. These directions you mentioned, is that the TIS or some else? I had thought it was the center bearing but that looks good and the u-joint has no play at all. In fact, driveshaft and guibo look pretty new. If the CV doesn't fix it, it is going to start to get real expensive...:sad2:

#4 · Mar 4, 2009 No, its from being in there and having to get back under there to fix the CV grease leak that made a huge mess. The whole driveshaft is 400 bucks or so shipped online. It was worth it for me to buy the whole thing. Ryan #5 · Apr 11, 2009 Discovered my CV joint on the driveshaft is torn. Where did you find a driveshaft for $400 online? Is it a Genuine OEM part? Tischer sells it for $708. The CV joint assembly itself is only $135 so I was planning to only buy that assembly. Tischer also sells the center support bearing for $70 so I figured I'd replace that for good measure as well. I already have a new flex disk from a previous repair. If I can get a Genuine OEM complete driveshaft for $400, I'd do that instead. Does the complete driveshaft including the center mount bearing? RealOEM references "See SI 260196038" on the part for the CV joint assembly. Do you have a copy of this SI you could post/send? #7 · Apr 11, 2009

Well my problem turned out to be the worse case scenario. The differential has broken teeth on the ring and pinion. I had replaced the CV and the problem didn't go away so I took it in to the shop. If you are interested, I'll sell you the CV I removed, which has 28k miles on it for $45 shipped. It seems to be in perfect shape and the boot is not torn. So it looks like these guys are just rebuilding driveshafts? They charged $400 for a complete assembly? Did you have to send yours in first to be rebuilt or did they send you one fresh and then you sent yours back as core? How long have you had this driveshaft in your car? 0 Reply #9 · Apr 15, 2009 No they send you a balanced drive shaft with a new BMW CV, BMW u joints and a new BMW support bearing. Well that doesn't sound so bad. I checked with some other people and they've gotten driveshafts from them (in use on other vehicles) with no complaints. I'll have to give them a call and find out the total cost with all shipping involved and compare that to just CV+bearing ($200+ship from Tischer) and labor. I suspect with the labor savings on an entire driveshaft swap, it may turn out to be pretty close to the same price. 0 Reply #12 · Apr 15, 2009 and you will have a freshly balanced driveshaft as well #13 · Apr 17, 2009 The balancing is my main concern with just a CV repair. A replacement OE CV is probably not too unlikely to throw balance off, but one never knows. I called Driveline Service of Portland they quoted me $415 + $75 refundable core charge for my driveshaft. Core is redunded assuming my shaft is reusable, which won't be an issue. The $415 includes all the shipping too, both ways. I'm still waiting on my shop to give me labor prices for rebuild vs. replace, but I think I've made up my mine to do the replacement.
