Minor differences are the inlays (thumbnail on the 5120 and hump-block on the 5420) and a very nice touch on the 5420 are the bound f-holes. crambone

The inlays are different as has been mentioned - some people prefer the thumb ones of the 5120. Bound f-holes as has been mention. Also, different colours are available for them - you can't get a G5120 in Aspen Green, for instance. Also, the G5420T has a secure bridge thingy.. not sure if it's secure, or floating on the G5120. If you're deciding between the two - the 5120 is alright, but honestly it doesn't sound like a Gretsch to me - the 5420 is killer. Fantastic guitar. A little glossy but you can sand that back on the neck - I wouldn't buy online though - these Gretsch necks are something you'll really need to test out. My 5420T was a little awkward - it wasn't particularly thick, wasn't thin either, but it cramped my hand really fast. sleewell

They're great - they sound nothing like the classic Gretsch sound though. That can't be denied. Still great guitars imo. jota

Stock buckers can sound good on the G5120. They're not Filtertrons but you can get them Gretschy enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UNapx25a6g&feature=youtu.be Help!I'maRock!

I tried all the adjustments and they sounded OK but not like a Gretsch. I bought two Gretsch HS Filtertrons $120 for both (1/2 price of TV Jones) and installed them. BAMM!!! Now it sounds exactly like a Gretsch should. P

Also just very recently put a Compton aluminum bridge on it. Also just started using Curt Mangan nickel strings. I am very happy. In single coil mode, this guitar is chime city! J

I fixed mine in place myself as I play 12's and it would move all over the place if I bent strings. I would concur on the sound of the blacktop filtertrons, they sound fantastic. The tone of this thing is truly beautiful. Also, since fixing the bridge in place I have no tuning issues despite heavy use of the bigsby. I had constant tuning issues before fixing the bridge. I guess that'll happen if you play heavy and use heavy strings. Telechamp

I put GFS Surf 90's in my 5120, and these pups made all the difference in the world - those stock Gretschbuckers were really muddy. Now I want to actually play it! 5120_IMG_0389pb.jpg IMG_7605_zps8ddf8403.jpg J

Hey, a bit late - if you prefer thumbnail markers and can afford to or are willing to change pickups later, well get the 5120. You can secure the bridge yourself with some double sided tape. Way cheaper. Smacky the Frog
