Distributor Drive Reindexing

All the threads about pulling out the distributor drive warn about dropping the two shim washers. But, none give a clue about how to avoid dropping them. What can I do to avoid dropping them? I don't need to pull the drive all the way out. I just want to change it's position. Thanks. Top User avatar rte592 Posts: 606 Joined: Sun Sep 07, 2008 10:19 pm

That's the trick You dont pull the drive all the way out. Even if you do pull the drive all the way out, the shims sit on a ledge of sorts and pretty well stay put. Top User avatar fusername Posts: 6806 Joined: Sun Jan 28, 2007 11:26 am

if you do need to pull it all the way out, or accidently do, you can pull them up w/ amagnet, then lube em w/ heavy oil or grease, then slide them over a screwdriver, put the screwdriver in the hole, and let em slide down untill they sit on the ledge they are supposed to be on. now use the screwdriver to center them perfectly and drop the drive gear back in place. Easier done than said. give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again. Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously. Top User avatar david58 Moderator Posts: 14100 Joined: Sun Oct 23, 2005 6:14 pm

How far off is it? If it is a 180 out install, then you don't have to pull the drive. Remove the drive off the bottom of the dizzy rotate it 180. Top Bugfuel Posts: 3011 Joined: Fri Apr 20, 2001 1:01 am

There has been discussion/debate over this in the recent past, about how the distributor lubrication (oil feed) may be compromised if the drive shaft or dist itself are 180deg off. To sleep better, install the drive shaft properly. Top mikemck Posts: 97 Joined: Tue May 30, 2006 6:01 pm

Right now it is about 180 deg. off from the official position. I already reversed the thing on the bottom of the distributor. But, the Mallory distributor has the #1 at about 3:00 and I would rather have it about at 4:30 like an 009. I have been almost afraid to change it because of all the warnings about dropping the washers. The Bentley manual even says I might have to tear the engine apart if I drop them. Is the risk of dropping them when putting them in? Or, can they stick to the distributor drive when it is removed and fall in? Thanks for your replies. Both Like mentioned before you lube them up and install them with a long straight screw driver....You basically just slide them down the shaft. They do stay put if you dont shake the motor around while the drive gear is out. If you drop one you can retrieve it with a magnet....You may have to turn the motor up side down :D Top mikemck Posts: 97 Joined: Tue May 30, 2006 6:01 pm

I tried to pull the drive up with a magnet and with snap ring pliers. It seemed to come up a bit and then get stuck. Why is this happening? Maybe I need to turn the crank a bit. I have ordered the tool for removing it. Top User avatar Marc Moderator Posts: 23741 Joined: Thu May 23, 2002 12:01 am

The drive pinion needs to rotate slightly CCW as it comes up (following the thread of the brass worm gear on the crankshaft). Rotating the crankshaft with the pinion not all the way down will damage the brass gear - don't do that. Top Bugfuel Posts: 3011 Joined: Fri Apr 20, 2001 1:01 am

get a pencil, shape the other end to fit very snugly in the spring hole at the center of the drive shaft. Remove the spring. Wedge pencil in tight. Lift and rotate as you are lifting. Minimal crank rotation back and forth may help, no more than a tiny nudge, to free up the shaft if it binds. Need to get a good feel to it. Top mikemck Posts: 97 Joined: Tue May 30, 2006 6:01 pm

Before I knew that I shouldn't rotate the crank when the pinion is not all the way down I rotated the crank when the distributor was out. I think the pinion remained down. Would I have felt something if I was damaging the brass gear? It felt like compression in the cylinders. Can I see the brass gear if I look through the fuel pump opening? It's an urban myth. It not an oil feed hole. It's a VENT/DRAIN hole! If it were an oil feed hole it wouldn't need a groove on the outside distributor shaft housing leading downward from the hole. The 010 and 019 don't even have the hole! The vent hole helps prevent oil from being pushed up through the bushings and into the distributor bowel. If you look at that various vacuum advance distributors, some of them have the holes aligned away from the case opening. Scott Novak Top Post Reply
