#1 · Nov 21, 2015 Vehicle in photographs: 2009 VW Rabbit Items needed:
  • 10mm Socket
  • 13mm Wrench
  • 13mm Socket
  • Flat-head screwdriver or pick to remove hydraulic locking clip
  • Dot 4 brake fluid for the bleeding process
I went with an aftermarket replacement because that is all I could find locally. Part: FTE KN19031.4.1 Slave Cylinder Some common symptoms: Spongy feeling in clutch pedal, Clutch pedal falls to the floor, unable to take transmission out of gear, etc. Mine gave me those warnings within 10 second window before failing completely. Here are some annotated photographs of the procedure. Image Image Image Image Image *Very important: Be extremely particular and very sanitary when it comes to open hydraulic lines. Even the smallest amount of oil (or any petroleum products) that gets introduced into the line will ruin the seals of the Slave Cylinder, Master Clutch Cylinder, and the Master Brake Cylinder). Image Image Image Re-install everything in reverse order. After all of the above is complete, top-off the brake fluid reservoir with new fluid and proceed with the standard bleeding procedures. I did not bench bleed the slave cylinder prior to installing. When I went to bleed it, I had a friend pump the clutch with his hands until we got good fluid circulation. During this process, the clutch pedal will continue to fall to the floor until you get most of the air bled out of the line. The clutch pedal on my 2009 Rabbit is dropping to the floor in cold weather. We were able to fix the problem by topping off the brake fluid, but now after one week the problem has returned. Following your photos as a guide, I do not see any evidence of brake fluid pooling beneath the slave cylinder or leaking anywhere on the slave cylinder or nearby hydraulic lines. The question: Without visual evidence of a leak in this area, is it still likely that the slave cylinder needs to be replaced, or should I look for a different cause of the problem? Thank you for your time- JP #3 · Dec 21, 2016 if the level of the brake fluid in the reservoir got too shallow, there's a possibility that you sucked in some air into your slave cylinder. it may work after again if you just bleed the slave cylinder itself. doesn't hurt to try. did you have to bleed the slave cylinder a week ago? also, to answer your question: yes, slave cylinders can fail without leaking fluid. #4 · Dec 28, 2016 Thank you Le0n! #5 · Jan 11, 2018 I have everything off and when I went to install new slave, I hooked it up to the fitting to check it and it leaks every time I put it below reservoir level. Any suggestions? I hooked up old slave cylinder and it leaks too. When you push the piston in by your hand you can hear air coming out by the hydraulic input fitting #6 · Dec 11, 2021 Same problem here. Did you ever get it to work? 0 Reply This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread. Insert Quotes Post Reply
