The goal of the discipline is to produce a comprehensive theory which can also be used as a guideline for the production of translations. The theory would gain by being developed along lines of argument which are neither neo-positivist nor hermeneutic in inspiration .. and constantly tested by case-histories." (Lefevere 1978: 234-235). While discussing the basic conflicts in translation theory, Eugene A. Nida, probably the most celebrated translation theorist of the world, states: "Despite major shifts of viewpoints in translation during different epochs and in different countries, two basic conflicts, expressing themselves in vary-1ng degrees of tension, have remained. These fundamental differences in translation theory may be stated in terms of two sets of conflicting "poles": (1) literal vs. free translating, and (2) emphasis on form vS. concentration on content. These two sets of differences are closely related but not identical, for the tension between literal and free can apply equally well to both form and content. However, in general, the issues are not well defined. For the most part, such expressions as literal vs. free, translation vs. paraphrase, and Words vs. sense are essentially battle-cries for those who wish to defend their work or criticize the work of others. Rarely are these contlicting views analysed in detail or thc implications of such principles worked out carefully in actual practice". (Nida 1964: 22-23). A careful look at the literature on translation theory and a study of translation products reveal that entirely different methods are followed in translating the same text and, as a result, A commemoration lecture on A.P. Andrewskutty held on 28th March 2005 in the Tamil University, Tanjavur where Andrewskutty expired while lecturing on 1st November 2004.

The translation activity has been very old. One may say that its history traces back to the invention of human language. The earliest reference of translation activities was found in the third millennium BC. Though translation activity has been present throughout the existence of human civilization, till 20th-century translation was not given its due importance. During the 20th and 21st centuries, translation progressed a lot, established itself as a separate discipline as well and was given its due credit by Scholars all over the world. This present research paper looks at the history of translation in the west. It also aims at giving a brief outline to the researchers in the field of translation study. Different reference books have been used to collect the translated works and to decide the historical periods. Though this research scholar does not claim that this list is enervating but is still useful to the researchers.

Human beings live in a social world and interaction is at the heart of human society with language being the tool for this interaction and communication. In a world marked by globalization and global communication, there is a deeply-felt need for mutual understanding among people of diverse cultures and languages. In the absence of a common universal language for all, this very need is met by translation. Translation plays a fundamental role in exchanging views and information between languages. Thus, translation coexists with communication and language, and various societies need translation for communication purposes. This article aims at providing a concise background of the translation studies, theories and areas, as well as a discussion on the current issues and future perspectives. The readers are introduced to some famous translation scholars including their view of translation studies. At the further discussions, this study lets the readers to acknowledge the main issues on translation studies, focusing on the debate of equivalence versus variations in intertextual texts analysis. Some tendencies of variations, such as different grammar and sentence structure, diglossia leakage, and pragmatic consideration are also presented to present to what extent variations occur during investigation processes. Therefore, regarding those tendencies, this study is closed by the description of Matthiessen's proposals about points of consideration to construct a parameter to measure meaning variations. With Illustrations in English, French, German, Russian and Hungarian. Budapest: Scholastica. 2003. 473 pp. ISBN 963 206839 4 , 2003
Languages in Translation is based on my lectures on the theory, practice and teaching of translation delivered over the last twenty years at the Interpreter and Translator Training Centre of Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and at the University of Miskolc. The approach I developed in this book is novel in the field of translation-specific comparison of languages in three respects: (1) it is a multilingual comparison, involving five languages, (2) it has a dynamic character, and (3) the emphasis is on the operational aspects of the translator’s activity. The procedure I followed started with data collection: I amassed a large body of multilingual translational data, and then analysed it to discover the rules, regularities and principles governing the seemingly subjective decisions of translators by describing, classifying and explaining the transfer operations behind them.
