Lockdown has meant my F10 had not done any long journeys, and with the battery being almost 10 years old I was needing to charge it every few weeks. I last charged it on Thursday with the intention of replacing it yesterday...but literally 200m from Halfords the car failed, with fuel control warning. Using my Foxwell code reader there were plenty of codes relating to minimal battery voltage, so I walked to Halfords, bought a new one and fitted it by the roadside. Unfortunately that allowed all the faults to clear except for 481B01 EKPS voltage is too low. Even with the new battery it refused to start for ages then did once and ran at idle for about a minute before failing. I ended up getting recovered to home. (that was fun as the recovery couldn't get it out of park following their normal process which apparently is to crank the engine whist pushing the selector side button and 'waggling' it). Fortunately the car did eventually start for a few seconds and we took it out of park, put into neutral and left the ignition on when it stopped. Once at home I've be able to use ISTAD and it gives two codes: 481B28 "EKPS not coded for the vehicle' and 801C20 ZGM central fault memory full (information but I can't see how to clear it). So it looks like the battery failing has caused the EKPS fuel control module to lose its coding to the car. ITSAD says to recode it, so I guess I'll have to install and learn how to do it with ISTA-P....time for some forum searching. unless there is another way to do it? I also have a used Module (its EKPSv3) on order from ebay but that is from a 520 so will need coding as well (it was £15). I couldnt find any that had come from an N57 525D so hopefully would have been accepted. I'll update with progress! Dave

The problem with ISTA/P will be it will want to update all ecus to the latest level in that version so could take a little while plus you ideally need a charger connected that can deliver something like a stable 50A or something like that. I wonder if it’s something that could be tweaked with e-sys

Thanks for the fast response, I do have a stable charger that can give 40A continuous (its currently connected to fully charge the new battery after registering it). I'm not aware of e-sys so time for some more research. I have used NCS Expert with my E61 (hence why I have the charger), but never needed to do anything until now on the F10

I just found this youtube that shows e-sys being used to code the EKPS but its too fast to follow (at on the first pass) so i'll need to find some online tutorials.

@Oddsocks This may help: https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/coding-an-ekps-fuel-pump-control-unit-for-an-x3.1396062/ Shawn is the man when it comes to coding taught me so much when I first started. However now I use Bimmercode for my needs but it won't be any good for you I don't think in this instant

All fixed this morning, using the process explained in the link bmwzoom shared. The only extra thing I needed to do after using esys was go back into ISTA-D and clear the fault codes. The car actually feels better than it did before, possibly because the CAFD file I applied to the replacement (from a F10 520D not a 525D) was a later version (from 2014 whereas the car is 2010). I did first try recoding the existing module as ISTAD was saying the ECU was responding and it already had a CAFD file that was the correct format, but even though eSys indicated everything worked, the fault code remained, so I swapped out the unit.
