slipd Hi guys, Is this even a thing with the gearboxes on the mk5? I seem to recall having it done on my mk3 and part of a longtime service, albeit by a very reluctant mechanic  Mine is ten years old and just done 50k. Thanks. #1 · Jan 23, 2018 Hi guys, Is this even a thing with the gearboxes on the mk5? Yes you need to check the level if it has been leaking out otherwise it is up to you if you want to change it out at 50k/10years of service. If you have an autotrans we need to know the type. #3 · Jan 23, 2018 Yup, it's a manual GTI. Six speed if that makes any difference? #4 · Jan 23, 2018 I'm hearing that, this: g052 171 a2 is the correct dealership code for the fluid, here in the UK. Approximately need 2.5ltrs of it? Is it an easy job to do? #6 · Jan 23, 2018 (Edited) As for the correct part number check with dealer as I know the number has been changed and 2.5L should be fine the capacity is listed as 2.3l. It drains from the bottom fills from the side and as always on level ground. Just make sure you have the correct bits for the plugs because there have been two types. Also it is not a bad idea to check that you can remove fill plug before you drain don't want to drain out oil only to find you can not remove fill plug or have wrong bit. 0 Reply #5 · Jan 23, 2018 We are about the same in mileage and years and I have not serviced mine yet. I probably will when I hit 60k. #7 · Jan 24, 2018 Thanks GTI! #8 · Feb 3, 2018 Right, what about the oil itself? Best to use the original dealership or this stuff by Fuchs? TITAN SINTOFLUID FE SAE 75W - who, incidentally make the OEM stuff for the UK market? I ask, because it's almost half the price over here... #9 · Feb 3, 2018 You should be fine. #10 · Feb 3, 2018 Thanks GTI - have ordered now ;) 3 litres for £27 on eBay. So as I understand it, you jack the front up, unscrew the fill hole (I've just ordered a funnel with a pipe), then unscrew the drain hole. Drain, then screw back the drain cover and fill until the clear oil begins to overflow... easy. Thanks. #11 · Feb 3, 2018 You drain, fill, and check with the car level...... sent you PM with instructions for both 6speed and 5speed. The 5speed is a more involved process. I found the drain, naturally on the bottom side of the box but I really couldn't see where the fill plug was? I've got a JHY box according to my handbook - if that even makes any difference? The fill plug looked to be some kind of hex fitting, that right? Looking at the front to the car, UK right hand drive, where roughly is the fill plug? The gear box is on the right hand side of the engine. Thanks. #14 · Feb 19, 2018 (Edited) Image #15 · Feb 19, 2018 Thanks GTI! So is that pic looking straight at the gearbox, from the front of the car? I couldn't see anything that resembled the fill plug? Maybe it was all covered up with road muck. I've got some degreaser on the way, so all should be revealed after I've cover it in that ;) #16 · Feb 19, 2018 (Edited) Front of car from below. Here is another view from removed transmission Image #17 · Jul 21, 2018 Image Image Image Okay, I was doing my oil/filter change today and I thought I'd attempt to do the gearbox oil. I couldn't even find the empty plug  ...as for the refill plug! I'm stumped. Help!! #18 · Jul 21, 2018 Please check your PM for a link to workshop manual for your six speed gearbox it will show the locations you are looking for Insert Quotes Post Reply
