3 giới từ trên đôi khi làm cho người dịch ‘bối rối” (nên thường được gọi những giới từ gây ra ‘sự nhầm lẫn’) chưa nói đến là ở tiếng Việt tương đương với 3 từ trên là cụm từ ‘ngoài ra’.

BESIDES (pre):

Nếu ta dùng ‘besides’ trước một danh từ thì nó có nghĩa là ‘thêm vào’ (add) hay ‘cộng vào’ (+: plus) như

Besides the violin, he plays the piano and the flute. (He plays 3 intruments.).

EXCEPT (pre):

Trái lại ‘except” lại có nghĩa ‘loại trừ” (substract) hay ‘trừ cái đó đi (-: minus) như

I like all musical instruments except the violin (I like all….. but I don’t like the violin).

APART FROM (pre):

Tuy nhiên, ‘apart from’ lại được dùng với cả 2 nghĩa trên (vừa ‘loại ra’ vừa ‘cộng vào’). Xin xem 2 ví dụ sau:

Apart from the violin (= besides the violin), he plays the piano and the flute. I like all musical instruments apart from the violin (= except the violin.)

Và có điều khi 3 từ này dùng sau các từ ‘no’, ‘nothing’, ‘nobody’ & các từ phủ định tương tự thì 3 giới từ này lại có cùng một nghĩa. Xin xem ví dụ:

He has nothing besides/except/apart from his salary. (= He only has his salary).
