jgeorgep J Looking for advice.. Im new to this forum but what has just been said applies to my experience. Ill give you a brief history. Golf Mk 6 1,4 Engine

2014- My daughter rings me from Blackpool hospital where shes working- Care wont start in SAFE mode
I arrive with spare key-Car starts and runs for 4 years on spare key
March 2018- Daughter now working in Oldham.. Bad weather conditions -10c. Engine wont start showing SAFE
AA called. Abandoned car awaiting Pickup when weather improves.
4 days later AA booked . I arrive with spare key having changed battery in key. Car starts first time.AA cancelled.
3 days later- daughter returns to Blackpool- Car back in SAFE mode.
I arrive with spare key- Wont start.
Call AA-Various attempts including disconnecting battery- Car wont start.
AA tows to independent garage in Blackpool at 10 pm.
Next day garage rings. Car dead. Wont start. We discuss keys and immobiliser
That day garage rings back. looking like immobiliser problem. May need new module which includes new clocks.
States that keys will require re programming after this.

If you attempt to start a MK6 with an unprogrammed key it will display "safe" and then the engine will stall. I don't believe you need the clocks swapping out, you need new transponders in the keys and re-programming. #4 · Mar 10, 2018

#7 · Mar 10, 2018 Thank you for your reply. I intend to drive to Blackpool on Monday to try to convince the Garage of your case. Does the transponder sit in the bottom half of the key and can it be bought and replaced ?? #8 · Mar 11, 2018 It would be easier for you to replace the keys, as opening mk6 OEM keys is a bit of a hack job. You can order keys from VW specifically for your car as they'll have details of your lock barrels. Your issue is programming for the immobiliser, if neither of your keys are recognised by the car at the moment ( both causing the dash to display SAFE) then the dash needs to be removed and stripped for programming on the bench (unless VW have any other methods to do it).
