GTX 770 Or GTX 590? - Graphics Cards - Linus Tech Tips

I've narrowed it down to these two cards. and I cannot make up my mind. My goal is to be able to play nearly every game on max settings at 60 fps. My monitor is a Dell 1600x900 IPS. I've been looking at benchmarks for these two cards and they seem to perform the same in most games, except BF4 and ARMA 3. BF4 has nearly perfect SLI scaling meaning the 590 would beat the 770 by a fair margin. ARMA 3 seems to have similar scaling, with the 590 edging out the 770.

The GTX 770 and the GTX 590 are both $320

• My psu is 750W 80+ Bronze (nvidia recommends 700W for 590)
• My case has adequate cooling
• I'm used to lots of noise (I have a GTX 465 OCed)
• I mainly play simulators and Battlefield
• My monitor is 1600x900 (don't tell me to upgrade to 1080)
• I will be using display port (both cards have it)
• I don't "need" new features

So which card shall I buy?

770 would be my choice.  You should have no problem maxing games out at your resolution.

gtx 770. 590 doesnt have any of the fancy new stuff that the 600 and above series do have

also, SLI 770 are viable while SLI 590 isnt with a 750 watts PSU

I wouldn't get the 2 generations behind one. Go with the 770.

I had a 280X that without Mantle could play the game on Ultra, so I would sure hope a 770 could do the same on a LOWER resolution. 

Also, why does my 780 get worse FPS than a 770 in ARMA 3? I don't trust those benchmarks

I would rather have a 1080P res and play on high than 1600P on ultra. Also you have to bump up the AA quiet more than on 1080P .

@Ryan Leech a 770 can max out 1080p at ultra. You'll be fine, 780's get around 50-120 fps depending on the scenes.  You''ll get 40-90 easily probably, with 50-70 being the middle ground.  You can always turn off AA and ambient occlusion.

Especially since 1600x900 isn't as many pixels as 1080p. You'll be fine.  I recommend upgrading to 1080p though.

Can i say, just who uses 200% scaling on bf4? its just useless to push the gpu more than the monitor can output like duhh

Go for the 770 and save the sli hassle with the 590

Try turning everything to ultra, it takes load off of the cpu

Hey! Don't trash-talk Fermi like that! Curently, Fermi still has the crown for strongest cuda cores of any Nvidia gpu architecture. Despite the odds, The GTX 580 with 512 cores still runs laps around the GTX 680(1536 cores) and the newer 760(1152 cores). The GTX 590 with its dual GF110 GPUs was and still is a beast of a card and deserves so much more than your disappointing remark. While The 500 series may not have newer features included in the 6 and 700 series' like shadowplay, their actual gameplay performance is nothing to be downplayed. If any GPU's are "terrible" its the worthless 600 Series. :angry:

I wouldn't think a 4770 would have issues in Arma 3, but I guess so The game is also horrible optimized, so that's part of the issue. GPU and CPU are both pinned at like 50%ish usage while playing... whether I am getting 80fps or 15 fps
