What is the difference between these chipsets? Why should I want to choose motherboard with one or the another?

More features really. Better BIOS etc. the more you pay the more you get in this case. But it won't affect performance

B85 is business oriented chipset for 3rd gen of Intel cpus.
H81 is consumer oriented chipset for 3rd gen of Intel cpus.
H97 is consumer oriented chipset for 4th (haswell) gen of Intel cpus.
All have the same 1150 socket.

I wouldn't even include X99 in that, since it isn't even related to the others. It only supports DDR4 RAM, and it only supports three Intel CPUs so far. (Plus Xeon chips.) It's a new platform, unrelated to the previous iterations. (The ones you listed.)

Wrong!!!!
3rd gen Intel chips are iVY bridge and those are 1155 CPUs

So if I pick as my CPU Intel Xeon E3-1230v3 3,3GHz 8MB or Intel Core i5-4460 3.20GHz 6MB than I need H97 board like ASRock H97 ANNIVERSARY. Other than that the only factor I should be looking at it price and if it got all the connectors that I am planning to use.
@MeepLikesToBuildPc's's Does this change anything I said above?

No you don't NEED a h97 mobo, even a h81 mobo will be fine. Yes
The only thing you must consider is which socket does the cpu have and which one does the mobo support. Today's consumer grade cpus are all LGA 1150 so you can pick between h81, b85, h97 and z79 mobos. Pick the one that you like the most based on the number of usb ports and such.

@JoeTheProgrammer Be careful with h81 and b85 because they might need a bios update before you can install latest cpus. The problem is that you cannot update a bios without a supported cpu inserted into a mobo. I would suggest h97 for Intel Xeon E3-1230v3 3,3GHz 8MB or Intel Core i5-4460 3.20GHz 6MB

Yes. @Hodor isn't right at all.
They are all Consumer boards but B85 is just a little better than H81 and H97 is better than them both in features and in overclocking. They are also ALL 1150 boards

Thats true. What I did it I got a haswell cpu, not a haswell REFRESH one. (refresh versions need an update and they come with 1ghz extra speed but that like 1-2 fps in games)

@IMPERIUS, @Hodor, @MeepLikesToBuildPc's's Well, I need a board that would not require BIOS update since I have never done that before and I would not have supported CPU anyway. They pretty much all got connectors that matters to me and the price difference is about 30 euro which is pretty huge considering that it's almost he cost of the cheapest one.
Isn't the Xeon higher tier than i5-4460? It's strange that http://pcpartpicker.com/display notification about BIOS update on H81 and B85 for i5-4460 and is happy with H97 while it's happy with all of them (H81, B85, H97) using Xeon E3-1230 v3.

Check the manufacturers website for detailed information about cpu support. It might be possible that some mobos have newer version of bios flashed out of the box. As I said, check the manufacturers website.

So you are looking at the 4460 or the 1220 v3?
First, what will you be using your pc for? Next, you can get the i5-4440 which is haswell and works with any board you have. Thats what I did, 4440 and h81 combo.
And yes, the xeon is "higher tier" if you will be using your pc for things like streaming, rendering etc. but I think it doesn't give you any big difference in gaming

@Hodor Thanks.
@IMPERIUS Most of the time low-end stuff such as browsing the web or programming. But from-time to time I would be rendering home videos so hyperthreading of that Xeon would come in handy. Right now I am not planning to play games on it but in the future (when I would have the time and be in the mood for something like that) I want to be able to play some games.

Keep in mind most H97 boards do not have overclocking options for anything but the G3258. K series CPUs only work full out on Z87/Z97.
That being said most AsRock H97s have OC options, and H87 boards mostly have oc abilities too.

Look up its manual online before you buy. Read through the BIOS section.

Lol just an FYI:
Hyperthreading and overclocking are completely different.
