Joined Apr 8, 2010 Messages 301 Reaction score 25 ive narrowed it down to these two. I can get a used set of adam a7x for $990 after tax or a brand new set of Neumann kh120 for $1180. Ive listened to the Adams before but not the Neumanns. Which do I choose? Im not getting a sub. I mix and record everything from rock to EDM music. Adams are definitely a little large for my desk and I mix fairly close to the speakers. Neumanns are smaller but I'm concerned about the 5.25" woofer on the neumanns being a little small and that ill regret not having a sub or going with the adams 7" woofer. Any thoughts or opinions on which to choose? Thanks IInGodWeTrust

These are significantly less expensive. Must be a reason.

Some people report ear fatigue (probably due to the ribbon tweeter) with these and I do get a bit of that during longer sessions. This seems to vary greatly between individuals. If your room isn’t treated it might be worth looking at cheaper monitors (like the Focals mentions in this thread) and investing in some bass traps and treating first reflection points. I listened to some different models a few years back in a nice audio store’s test room. Tried the Adams, Focals and Neumanns, left with the Neumann KH120s. Love them! If they ever go down for some reason I’d go out and buy the same again. I don’t feel a lack of bass or any need for adding a sub. The smaller KH80s felt a little weak in the bass, but the 120s are fantastic.boltrecords

Click to expand...Weird because I hear a lot of people say the opposite in that there is very little ear fatigue due to the ribbon tweeter. What’s the reason for cheaper monitors? Is that just to put part of the budget towards the bass traps and room treatment?

The room matters more than the speakers, and most domestic rooms don't actually sound all that accurate/good until you put a good bit of work into them. I

Click to expand...I have listened to all 3 both in a good studio setting and a home setting. I have found that Focals break in quicker and have (to my ear) better imaging. I have listened to them at all different volume levels and found Focals to be more consistant at all levels. I would agree wholeheartedly that room treatment is extremely important and anyone would benefit greatly by a little less monitor budget and better room treatment...that being said if your budget allows for more ,go with more in the Focals and room treatment. Only notable item with the 120s is that the port will occasionally “chuff” on bass transients at higher volumes. All that said, taste in monitors is a personal preference sort of thingchunky48

I was going to go with the barefoot footprint 01s, but the price is too good on the Nuemann’s at $640 a speaker. I’m just a hobbyist, so I think they’ll work perfect for my needs.
