I need to upgrade my monitor because I'm going to be working on pixel art and this thing ain't gonna cut it. I'll also be using it for a bit of gaming but mostly indie games and slower-paced stuff. My budget is about $200 and I'm in the US. I've settled on getting a monitor with an IPS panel because they generally have better color ranges. With my budget, I don't think I'll be getting any better than a 24"/1080p monitor (which is still a big improvement on what I have now). I've been eyeing the MSI OPTIX G241 because it apparently has a great contrast ratio of around 1400:1 which is noticeably better than most IPS monitors which are usually at around 1000:1. I'm not too sure how much of an improvement that would be in a practical sense though. It will mostly be used in a well-lit room and almost never in the dark if that makes a difference. I'm just concerned that poor contrast would be a major issue for creating pixel art to the point of negating the improved colors of an IPS panel. I would really appreciate any recommendations or advice here! rsfour

This is another one that I was looking at because it apparently used the same panel as the G241, with the higher contrast ratio. But the 24G2 had its panel quietly replaced with one that improved response times at the expense of that contrast ratio. Which is a downgrade for my purposes since I'll be focusing on creating art and only using it for light gaming. But I'm also wondering if the G241 has it's panel replaced in the same way... because the G242 uses the new panel from the newer 24G2 models. nsilvias

Oh nice! I'll put this one on my shortlist then.

I feel like that is one of the most important things, honestly. That's the main reason I settled on getting a monitor with an IPS panel. inner-G

Viewsonic typically have cheaper monitors with good color accuracy (factory calibrated) and good set of features. I see the cheapest ones seems to be a bit more than $300. Though 2 years ago I got super lucky and found them selling refurbished 34" ultra wide for $350 and couldn't pass it up lol. Take a look at their professional line of monitors. Deimos

Member Oct 28, 2017 12,207 Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I've narrowed it down to the MSI OPTIX G241, AOC 24G2, and GIGABYTE G24F. If anyone has any positive or negative experiences with these specific monitors I would love to hear about it! Especially in regard to content/art creation. You must log in or register to reply here.
