AI is rewriting the playbook for product leadership. As AI accelerates faster than any previous platform shift, software organisations need to rethink how they build, how they organise, and how they make decisions. In our latest Orbit conversation, product specialist Oji Udezue (formerly of Twitter, Calendly, Atlassian, Typeform, and Microsoft) discusses with Jason Richards how engineering teams can now move at extraordinary speed, powered by AI code generation, automation and new model-driven capabilities. But product discovery, workflow understanding, and customer adoption still move at a human pace. Oji describes this as the three-speed challenge: 1. Customer and market insight, which moves at human pace 2. Engineering execution, now becoming largely unconstrained by AI 3. Go to market, which depends on adoption, behaviour and timing For many years engineering capacity was the bottleneck. That constraint is now lifting, and is in danger of ‘flipping’. Product and marketing teams must adapt – they need greater operational focus, sharper prioritisation, more rigorous instrumentation, and faster learning cycles to keep pace with the opportunity. AI does not diminish the need for strong product management. It elevates it. How do AI native start-ups aim for 12 million in 12 months, rather than 2 million in three years? Zalos (YC F25) co founder William Fairbairn explains how Y Combinator’s expectations for AI companies have shifted, and why the phrase “grow to 12 million in 12 months” has become a real target for the strongest teams, not just a slogan. The common pattern he sees is forward deployed engineering. Instead of building in isolation, AI founders are spending deep time with customers, mapping workflows in detail and co creating solutions on site, then scaling those learnings across their product.
