[HONDA CBF190TR] Details and Test Ride Reviews

The CBF190TR introduced in this article is a model that shares the body and engine with the CBF190R but has been given styling that can be called neo-classic, such as a round-eyed single-lamp on an upright bar handle. It is produced by SUNDIRO HONDA in China. This CBF190TR was test ridden by former editor-in-chief of a motorcycle magazine for beginners, Hiroaki Yatagai.

Styling that follows the CB-R's trend

Overall Dimension [L x W x H] 2,019mm x 822mm x 1,083mm [Curb weight] 142kg [Wheelbase] 1,356mm [Ground Clearance] 150mm

The round-eyed, single headlight, bar handle, and trapezoidal silhouette from the side are unmistakable signs of the "Neo Sport Cafe Concept". I feel the same design essence as CB-R series such as CB250R and CB1000R. However, looking at the undercarriage, it seems that the scrambler style, which has become popular recently, has been added, such as the rugged tires with a stronger off-road style and tuck roll-like flat seats. I wonder if this CBF190TR can also run on the dirt by any chance!? The more I look at it, the more such expectations are raised.

[Sale Price] STD: Red, Black, Matte Silver, Gray: 3,200 USD (Japan)

Upright position with bar handle

[Seat height] 787mm

The seat is slightly higher than the CBF190R, a sibling model that shares an engine or mainframe. If you are a rider of 172cm and 75kg tall, you can manage to reach the heel and have a good foot grounding. Thanks to the light body, it is easy to handle. The top half of the body is almost vertical, so you can ride to work or school, or even touring all day and not have a hard time because of the position.

Perfect for any riding! -Actual reviews-

CBF190TRHang on CBF190TRLean out

The way of riding can be lean out or hang on freely.

The moment I started riding, I was convinced that the blood of the "Neo Sports Cafe Concept" was still flowing to this motorcycle. The "Neo Sport Cafe Concept" is a Japanese lineup of HONDA CB125R, CB250R, CB650R, and CB1000R. In other words, it is a CB-R series, and there is an appearance feature consistent with the series such as round-eyed one-light headlight on a short body before and after. However, from this CBF190TR, not only the elements of the design but also the "CB-R series likeness" can be felt firmly in terms of riding, so I am happy.

What makes me feel it most is the highly flexible riding position unique to the CB-R series. By combining an upright position with a wide bar handle, the rider is easy to move because of the load control on the motorcycle, and various riding styles can be taken according to the preference. Such a character has been firmly handed down to the CBF190TR.

For example, hang on (also known as hang-off). A riding style with an emphasis on cornering speed, where the waist is greatly lowered to the inside and the knees are extended, and the center of gravity is moved to the inside to greatly increase the bank angle. The supersport separate handlebar machine will naturally ride in this way, but you can also enjoy this dynamic riding style with the CBF190TR of the bar handle.

Then lean out. Hang-on is a way of riding that transfers the rider's center of gravity to the out side rather than the center line of the motorcycle. Although the bank angle to cornering speed is reduced, it is effective to suppress even when the rear wheel starts to slip out, there is an effect that it is easy to control. Well, it is possible to lean out even in the machine of the separate handlebar, but the motorcycle which can turn while putting out the elbow comfortably on the outside so far is quite rare.

CBF190TR CBF190TR

The CBF190TR has the upright position and wide handlebars of an off-road motorcycle, which makes it easy for the rider to move on the motorcycle and take various riding styles from on-road to off-road. Well, although both sides have advantages and disadvantages, it is a great advantage as a motorcycle that you can flexibly change the riding style according to your preferences, mood, and road conditions. That way, the way you enjoy riding can be expanded.

By the way, if you can control on-road riding as well as off-road riding, if the controllability is so far, the next thing you want to try is dirt performance. Well, the equipment I saw was "scrambler-like", and it was a light feeling that I tried to ride on the gravel road just in case, but this is unexpectedly good!?

Moderate off-road riding!

CBF190TR_4-01.jpg

Recently, the number of motorcycles of the genre called "scrambler style" which imitates the style of the off-road motorcycle of ancient times is increasing mainly by overseas manufacturers. DUCATI, TRIUMPH SCRAMBLER series, HUSQVARNA SVARTPILEN, and FANTIC CABALLERO are just cool, and there are surprisingly few models that pursue real dirt performance. However, the tire with a strong block pattern, tapered handlebar. Moreover, if the engine is small but even the cover of the guard style is attached, it might be even if the dirt wants to run after all (lol).

It is an honest review that it is unexpectedly cool when riding on the gravel road by CBF190TR. The compact and light chassis is easy to handle even on dirt roads and the push-in is also effective thanks to the wide handlebar. Even if I tried to stand riding, the operating system did not feel so strange. In other words, the CBF190TR was more suited to off-road riding than expected.

Certainly, I can not fly or bounce like a pure off-road motorcycle, but the front brake also has ABS to prevent falls due to locks, so if you encounter dirt on the road, if it is a compact CBF190TR it feels quite like that. And even if I never really hit the off-road, I can still say, "I can go with this motorcycle if I want to!". A handful of adventure spirits like that is all it takes to make my trip a lot more enjoyable.

[Display item] Speed, engine speed, fuel level, clock, odometer, trip meter, two trip meters, and gear position The lights are full-LED, including tail lights, indicator lights, etc., and the HI/LO headlight projector type. In the design, the headlight is lower than the turns signals, and the ring light is adopted, as the CB-R series.

Next to the fully digital meter that has the necessary and sufficient display function, it is equipped with a 5V/2A USB terminal that is convenient for charging mobile phones.

Details 02: Riding performance

Engine

CBF190TR CBF190TR

[Engine type / Displacement] Air-cooled 4-stroke OHC Single Cylinder / 184cc [Max output] 12.4kW / 8,000rpm [Max torque] 16.3 Nm / 7,000 rpm

The displacement is a modest 184cc, but it is legally allowed to ride on highways. The max output is 16hp at 8,000rpm and 1.6kg-m of torque at 7,000rpm. The gear may be air-cooled at a five-speed shift, so the normal speed is up to about 110km/h. If it is an ordinary road, it may feel a little powerless in the uphill, but it is enough if you think about the displacement. There was no scene where the shortage was felt by the start acceleration etc. from the signal waiting.

Handlebar

CBF190TR CBF190TR

The handlebars are a tapered type in which thickness changes in the middle. It is a handlebar shape common to the off-road motorcycle, and it is proof that it is highly rigid and sporty. The width is 822mm and it is wide, and it is set in the up position.

Suspension

CBF190TR CBF190TR

Handlebar

CBF190TR CBF190TR

[Tire sizes] Front: 110/70R-17, Rear: 140/70R-17 The front forks are an inverted type of Φ36mm (actual measurement), the rear uses a linkless but sporty monoshock, and preload adjustment with the attached tool is also possible. The bumpy block pattern of the large off-road style tires is CST bias tires. Certainly tubeless.

Brakes

CBF190TR CBF190TR

[Front brake] NISSIN one push 2 pot / petal disc [Rear brake] NISSIN one push 1 pot / petal disc

Around the brake that adopts a petal disc with an increased surface area to ensure heat dissipation. The front brake uses ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) to prevent rolling due to sudden braking, making it safe for beginners.

Undercarriage engine cover

CBF190TR_6-9.jpg

It seems that the defense power is not high enough to protect the engine from a rock hit, but it is equipped with a cover that seems to guard if it is a stepping stone from the tire. This is a great addition to the off-road character of the motorcycle.

Seat

CBF190TR_6-10.jpg

The seat has a tuck-and-roll finish for a more comfortable, uneven hold, and is a flat scrambler-style seat. Thanks to this, the sponge on the rider's side is thicker, more voluminous, and more comfortable to sit on.

Injection

CBF190TR_6-11.jpg

The fuel supply system uses a so-called injection, which is an electronically controlled injection (PGM-FI) with excellent fuel efficiency. It is properly trained, and there is no feeling of a lack of response to the accelerator operation which tends to be in low-cost overseas commercialize motorcycle.

Details 03: Utility

Fuel tank

CBF190TR CBF190TR

[Fuel capacity] 10.5L The fuel tank, which adopts an orthodox shape, has an internal capacity of 10.5 liters. The fuel is specified as regular unleaded, and the refueling port is hinged, and a large opening makes it easy to insert the refueling nozzle.

Helmet holder

CBF190TR_7-3.jpg

Equipped with a hook type helmet holder in front of under the seat (two places on the left and right). It's a great way to leave your helmet behind when you're away from the motorcycle.

Pillion footpegs

CBF190TR_7-4.jpg

The pillion footpeg brackets are extended from the rider's footpegs. Thanks to the refreshing rear tail design. The pillion footpeg heel guards also serve as a hook point during loading.

Retractable luggage hooks

CBF190TR CBF190TR

The rear side of the pillion seat is equipped with a folding loading hook. The method of loading seems to be limited in position, but it is still a big difference if it is not so.

Switch box

CBF190TR_7-7.jpg

[Right]: Starter switch / Headlight ON&OFF / Kill switch

CBF190TR_7-8.jpg

[Left]: Headlight Switching and Passing / Turn signals / Horn

There are LEDs built into the switch box, and each switch item glows in the dark. Thanks to the glow in the dark, there's less chance of error when riding at night!

Asymmetrical left and right shrouds

CBF190TR CBF190TR

The shrouds protruding from the bottom of the fuel tank were designed differently on each side. The shrouds are asymmetrical to match the size of the horn and other electronic components inside.

Number of brackets

CBF190TR CBF190TR
CBF190TR_7-13.jpg

The number of brackets is mounted on the left side of the swingarm to give the rear area a cleaner design. This method is also used on the "Neo Sports Cafe Concept" CB1000R.
