#1 · Jan 29, 2015 I was curious to see what the difference was in Horsepower between my 1978 CB400T2 and a 1983 CB450. Looking at internet specs, my CB400 has 27 horsepower, the CB450 has 45 horsepower. 50cc's and slightly larger carbs seem to be the only difference, but the amount of power is an amazing 18 extra horsepower! Can anyone explain what is different to make such a dramatic power increase? (This is assuming the figures I found are correct) Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Jan 30, 2015 You found the "low power" version numbers for the 400, a requirement in some European countries for inexperienced riders. The US versions are rated as 43 HP for the 400 and 47 for the 450. The 450 doesn't have larger carbs, same size as the 1980/81 400. 30mm. The 78/79 400 had 32mm carbs. IMO the 400 is a better engine #3 · Jan 31, 2015 Thanks for the explanation. I've been reading a lot on this forum and see you have contributed an incredible amount of diy and tech info including builds on your bike. Great Stuff! I'm sure you've gotten lot's of "attaboy's". Let me add mine too. Have you ever dyno'd your bike? If so, what did the dyno say? #4 · Jan 31, 2015 Thanks, I try to keep up to date with this section. No, I've never run it on a dyno. Tried once but the HD shop wouldn't talk to me anymore after hearing it's a Honda. Like the dyno really cares about what bike it's testing. :???: There's another place around here but he's set up to run ATV's/quads and didn't seem too interested in spending my money. I know it's as fast or faster than my Subaru Imprezza, gets 56 mpg at 75 mph and burns @1/2 quart over 3000 miles. If I keep it under 60 mph I'm getting low 60's mpg. #5 · Jan 31, 2015 (Edited) Isn't horsepower (in regards to internal combustion engines) just a number that is calculated from torque and engine speed (and, IIRC, the number 5,252)? I'd think that a dyno chart of an engine's torque @ RPM curve would be far more useful than a simple calculated peak horsepower number for comparison purposes between two engines. If I have a choice of two engines, one with a higher peak horsepower, and the other with a lower one but with a wider useful torque curve, I'm picking the latter. That would, I suppose, depend on the transmission gearing (and amount of gears), too; a peaky high-rpm engine might be better if it had a transmission with a close-ratio setup, significantly more gears, and a much lower first gear (because peaky high-hp engines tend to be anemic from idle to midrange, don't they?)... assuming I wanted to shift a lot more often  . Regards, #6 · Feb 1, 2015 You are right that hp = torque times rpm divided by 5252. Regarding peak horsepower and peak torque at various rpms, It's all about what the riders preference is. My preference is the same as yours, more torque over a wide rpm range as opposed to a peaky powerband stressing max horsepower. When I was 25, I wanted that rush of ripping through the gears. Now that I'm 60, I'm more along for the ride as a guest as opposed to a bike flogging maniac. This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread.
